As an added touch of personal sentiment, I am crafting this book cover as a gift for my lovely mother. She holds a small book dear to her heart, and I've longed to give it a new look that reflects her love for literature and nature's beauty. Her favorite color is white and so that was my choice for this project. Pattern
Terminologies used:
sc (single crochet)
hdc (half-double crochet)
- Foundation: 54 chains that is slightly wider and taller than my book.
- Row 1: Single crochet (sc) in each stitch across. Turn.
- Row 2: Half-double crochet (hdc) in each stitch onto R1
- Repeat R1 and R2 until my base cover reached the desired height and ensured it wraps around my book snugly. Which is 7 times in total in my case.
The base foundation of the book is ready.
Daisies Bloom
For the Daisy flowers, I created these cute flowers with yellow centers and white petals with the two patterns as shown below.
Daisy Flower - Pattern 1
- Center (White): I begun with a magic ring. Work 6 single-crochet (sc) stitches into the ring. Pull the ring tight and slip stitch to join.
- Petals (Yellow): Chained 6, worked 3 half-double crochet (hdc) stitches into the second chain from the hook. 1 sc and finally slip stitch to join.
- Continued until 9 petals for each daisy flower
Daisy Flower - Pattern 2
- Center (White): I begun with a magic ring. Work 8 sc stitches into the ring. Pull the ring tight and slip stitch to join.
- Petals (Yellow): Chained 8, slip stitch to join back to the circle.
- Continued until 9 petals for the flower is ready
- Then started with chain stitch across each of the stitch of each of the petals
Made 4 flowers with slightly varying sizing to help pick and choose on the final book cover.
All the Daisy Flowers are ready.
Strengthening the Daisy Flowers
All the daisy flowers were ready but with soft petals. I wanted to make the petals firm. For this I took the regular cross-stitch need and had a running stitch in white color along the edges of the petals on the back side. Refer pic 1.
Running Stitch on the The Base Foundation
I chose yellow for the running stitch as it perfectly complements the vibrant colors of the daisy flowers. Yellow enhances the cheerful and sunny nature of the daisies, creating a harmonious color scheme that brings the entire design to life. By incorporating yellow into the running stitch, I not only highlight the beauty of the daisies but also create a cohesive and visually appealing composition that captures the essence of nature's brilliance.
Attaching the Daisy Flowers
In this step, I decided to pull the extra long strings of the flowers underneath and tie it together as shown in the images
Close the Edges
In this step, I tried to see how the book fits into the cover and left margins on the base crocheted foundation to measure. Then, I took the inner loop of the chains stitches and crocheted them together as shown in the images in this step. As you can see in the first image, the cover is now ready.
Fitting the Book Cover
Then, I carefully fit the cover onto the book and it looked just perfect. The way I wanted it to turn out. I plan on gifting to my mom on the upcoming 'Mother's Day' in May!
