Daft Punk Costume
Supplies
I started off with a balloon and a contraption to hold it in position for paper mache.
After a couple layers of paper mache, I sketched the basic shape of the helmet. I then made templets out of paper and cut the pieces from craft foam. I attached the foam to the paper mache with glue.
I cut out the excess paper mache from the form and then ran a couple more layers of paper mache over the craft foam. At this point the shape was really coming together.
I then set the first one aside and repeated the process with the second helmet. (And made sure it fit my husband's head. LOL)
Wallace was eager to model the helmets.
Now it was time to figure out how to achieve the shapes on the sides of the helmet. I settled on a soda can and craft foam. I put on another layer of paper mache and then used wall spackle to smooth it out. I need to find a better way to do that... It's really messy and dusty, but it worked! I painted and then added more spackle and sanded as needed.
On to the visor! I hated this part... I took a layer of window film and covered it with a black sticky film meant for window tenting. I made a template with paper and it took me three visor attempts to get this right. I forgot to take a picture of how I did the lights. I took a strip of battery LED lights and hot glued them to craft foam to attach from the inside.

Moving back to mine, I repeated the spackle, sanding and painting. I used lids from a metal tin for the sides and LED lights for the visor. These were tricky to position. I ended up attaching them to craft foam and then attaching the foam inside the helmet. I used sponges to pad the inside for my head.
