Because I'm using reclaimed wood/scrap wood, I had a lot of gluing to do for this step stool.

First I planed my scrapwood so I had smooth surfaces to glue them together. And then when I had the 'new' lumber, I jointed and planed that into the right width and thickness. My slats were 60cm long, 2cm thick and 5cm wide. I used 7 slats because I wanted to make it of course in the 7 colors of the rainbow!

Making the 'legs' for the Step Stool

For the legs of the step stool I also used scrap wood which I had laying around. I used padouk for the legs because I love the beautiful red color of the wood. I glued two pieces together, because I wanted 35mm thick legs. Once they were glued together, I jointed and planed the wood again. 14cm high and 35mm thick.

I also drove in two screws on each side of the leg, so 8 screws in total for the two legs. To give the glue joint some extra strength. Then I started cutting out the shape on the bandsaw. I did this to give the bench a more elegant look, and also to take a bit of weight of. When this was done, I used a chamfer bit in the router to chamfer all the edges of the slats and the legs. For the legs I used a heavier chamfer than I used for the slats.

First Step of Assembling

To assemble the bench I didn't want visible screws in the top. So to solve this problem, I attached a smaller beam on the bottom with some screws. I made sure to pre-drill all the holes before I was driving in some screws.

Extra Support

I decided to give the step stool a little bit more of stability by attaching two crossbeams between the legs.

Oiling Everything

Now that all the holes are drilled, you can remove the screws again and it's time for some finishing!

I used the oils from Rubio Monocoat, You only need to apply one coat, let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then wipe of the excess with a cloth.

For the legs I used transparant Rubio Woodcream, just apply and no wipe-of!
