DIY Vent-Powered Boot Dryer

IMG_20220211_154407895.jpg

After dealing with wet boots my entire life, I decided to put an end to it. So I created a DIY boot dryer that captures the heat from your vent and funnels it into your boot. It's not only functional though, it is a great winter decoration for everyone to enjoy.

Note: This instructable is not just limited to boots. You can use many items with it, including mittens, hats, shoes, and many other items.

Supplies

To create this boot dryer, you will need the following:

  • A cardboard box around 45cm by 30cm
  • An extra sheet of cardboard. (Roughly the size of the bottom of your box)
  • Aluminum foil
  • 1m of PVC piping (or paper towel rolls if you don't have any on hand)
  • Gorilla tape
  • 30cm of Velcro
  • A handsaw (to cut the PVC piping)
  • A roll of winter themed wrapping paper
  • A winter bow
  • A utility knife

Optional Items

  • A pair of scissors
  • Clear tape (for the wrapping paper)

Preparing the Shelf

Using your utility knife, cut the sheet of cardboard to be approximately the size of the bottom of your box. This is going to be the shelf that is used to hold your boots.

Adding Room for the PVC Piping

Using your utility knife, cut circles in the cardboard sheet that are approximately the size of the PVC piping. These are going to be the holes for the PVC piping that is used to funnel the air into your boots.

Cutting the PVC Piping

Using your handsaw, cut the PVC piping into 2 short pieces. These will be affixed to the underside of the shelf and support the shelf itself and weight of the boots. Mine were approximately 15 cm long. I used the length of the long flap of the box as my guide. Using your handsaw, you need to cut an additional 2 pieces of pipe. These will be longer than the support pieces. These will ultimately fit through the circle holes you previously cut. They will serve as support for each individual boot and funnel the air from under the shelf through to the interior of your boot. Mine were approximately 23 cm long.

Attaching the PVC Piping Funnels

Now you're going to attach the PVC piping. Thread the longer pieces through the holes, leaving approximately one-fifth hanging out (see picture). Use the Gorilla tape so that it is firmly attached.

Attaching the PVC Piping Supports

Now you're going to apply the supports. All you need to do is place the shorter PVC piping pieces on the opposite corners as the pieces you just attached (see pictures). The supports are placed on the same side as the one-fifth portion from above. The supports you're now placing, should be longer than the one-fifth pieces. Use Gorilla tape to firmly attach.

Adding Aluminum Foil

Now, you need to make sure the cardboard doesn't get wet. Using aluminum foil and tape, cover the top and underside of the shelf in aluminum foil.

Installing the Shelf to the Dryer

After finishing the shelf, you need to install it. Place the shelf with the supports facing up on the top of the box with the flaps open. It should sit where the flaps would be if they were closed. Using Gorilla tape, tape the edge of the aluminum foil to the edge of the cardboard box on all 4 sides.

Extending the Box

Using gorilla tape, tape the flaps of the cardboard box sticking straight up. You are now done the bottom. Flip the box over.

Getting the Top of the Box Ready

To prepare the top of the box, make sure you can open and close all flaps. There might be tape or something not letting it open properly. Any hinderances should be removed.

Decoration!

Using wrapping paper and tape, wrap the box and make it look like a gift, because it sure is one! After wrapping is complete, all you need to do is add a bow and you're on the last step.

Velcro

To attach the bottom part of the Velcro, cut the strip into 4 equal parts. Use these four pieces to form 2 lines. The Velcro should look as if it is crossing the seam of the lid. Be sure not to accidentally cover the seam. Your box won't open if you do.

To attach the top part of the Velcro, cut the strip into 2 equal parts. These parts should be the length of 2 of the bottom pieces together. These pieces are meant to cover the bottom Velcro pieces and cross the seam. Stick the top to the bottom and enjoy! Simply peel back one half of the top strip to open. Re-stick to close.

Place box over a floor vent. Open your box, place a boot upside down on each piece of piping. Close the flaps. Re-stick the Velcro.

Now that it's completed, you can enjoy this dryer. Thank you all for watching and reading this article. Don't forget to Comment and Favourite!
