DIY Vacuum Adapter

I recently purchased a belt sander and the vacuum adapter that came with it did not fit my shop vac, so I decided to make my own adapter from an old yogurt container.

Gather Materials and Tools

You don't really need a lot of tools to make this adapter.

Materials

  • Quart yogurt container

that's about it...

Tools

  • hole saw-sizes 1-1/4 and 2 inch

You may need different sizes depending on your vacuum and dust port.

  • drill or drill press
  • pen/marker

Cutting the Hole in the Lid

Started by centering the adapter by eye and tracing it. I actually traced the wrong side first.) Drill a pilot hole for the center of the hole saw. Then drill out the circle. I was going to clamp it down but could not figure out a good way to do so. Instead I just went slow and kept a good hold on the cover.

The vacuum hose was the same diameter as the indent in the bottom of the container. This made it easier to center the hole on the container. I drilled a pilot hole again for the hole saw and drilled out the circle. There was a lot of tear out after drilling. I may have been going to fast.

Finished!

Join the two pieces together and you have...A vacuum adapter!

This design works fairly well for collecting dust but dust does build up in the "chamber".

I also included a few variations on ways you could modify it to fit different tools.
