DIY Thread Protector O-Ring
Thread protector o-ring got lost or worn out? Now your thread protector starts walking loose? Here’s how to get by until you find a proper replacement or keep repeating because it’s cheaper and it works.
Supplies
Masking tape
Gasket maker (your choice)
Patience
Mask the Threads and the Barrel
Mask around where the o-ring should be.
Apply gasket maker uniformly. I had a tube of Permatex Ultra Black that’s good for oil pans and that’s what I applied using my gloved finger.
Follow gasket maker instructions for cure time. In my case 24 hours.
Unmask
Carefully remove masking tape. The gasket should stay put and hopefully you’ll end with cleaner lines than mine.
Install Thread Protector
The gasket should get squeezed back as you torque down the thread protector.
Try unscrewing it gradually. You should notice that it takes a bit more effort to unscrew with the gasket now.
