DIY Stitch Costume
For this halloween season I have created a DIY stitch costume for all book/movie lovers. This costume is customizable and can be tailored to anyone's size. It's easy, fun, and adorable.
Gather Materials
For the first part of this project you will need
- 2 yard piece of light blue fabric
- An old t-shirt/dress
- Newspaper
- Chalk
- Marker
- Sewing machine / needle and thread
- Scissors
Drawing the Pattern
To create the dress for the costume, place an old dress/t-shirt onto a sheet of newspaper and trace it on, making sure to leave space for the seam allowance. You may also want to use a dress patter for this step. Once you have drawn the pattern onto the newspaper, cut it out and trace the pattern onto the fabric using a piece of chalk. Repeat this step for the second piece of the dress. Cut the two pieces out using a pair of scissors.
Sewing the Dress
Pin along the sides and sleeves of the dress to keep the two pieces of fabric together. Sew the sides of the dress, the shoulders, and the armpit region, making sure to leave a space for the arms. Once this is complete, hem the bottom of the dress as well as the neckline.
Designing the Back of the Costume
To create the design on the back of the dress you will need
- The dress
- A piece of dark blue felt
- Chalk
- Scissors
- Glue
Using a reference image, freehand the design onto the blue felt using a piece of chalk. Cut out the design using a pair of scissors and glue it onto the back of the dress.
Designing the Front of the Costume
To create Stitch's belly you will need
- The dress
- Blue and white paint
- A paintbrush
- A palette
- Newspaper
To prepare the dress for painting, place a few layers of newspaper into the dress to prevent the paint from bleeding to the other side. Draw the oval belly onto the dress using a piece of chalk. Mix together 1 part of blue paint to two parts of the white paint. For this project I used both dark blue and light blue paint. Paint the circle completely and let dry.
Creating the Signature Ears
To create the ears you will need
- Pink and light blue felt
- Scissors
- An old hairband
- Chalk
- Pipe cleaners
- Hot glue
Using a reference image, draw an ear-shape onto the blue sheet of felt. Cut this piece out and trace it onto the blue felt again to create the second ear. Trace this ear onto the pink fabric two times to create the inside part of the ears. Cut out all the pieces and lay them on top of each other (pink on top of blue).
Creating the Signature Ears Continued
Use a pair of scissors to cut two triangle notches into the ears (as shown in the first image). Separate the two parts of the ear and lay folded pieces of pipe cleaners onto the blue part. These pipe cleaners will provide support to the ears and prevent them from flopping. Glue the pipe cleaners onto the blue pieces of felt and then glue the pink pieces on top. Next, glue the ears onto the old hairband. Make sure the ears are secure.
Your Done
Congratulations! Your Stitch costume is complete and ready to be worn. You can amplify the dress by using face paint to create the nose or adding a tail to the back.
