Racer Back Dress with Sheer Overlay

Grab a (stretch) that fits you well and use it for your pattern.

Hem the bottom of each skirt piece.

Make the Sheer Overlay

With the fabric doubled, measure the length you want the skirt overlay to be. The waist width will match the underskirt you already cut out.

Piece It Together

Lay the skirt pieces with the hem up, on top on the sheer overlap panels. Then pin the sides and sew the front underskirt and the front sheer overlay together at the sides. Then pin the back underskirt and back sheer overlay together and sew them together at the sides.

Next lay the front of the skirt (both front pieces that were sewn together) on top of the back of the skirt pieces with the right sides together. The hem will be facing up and sew the sides together. Don't get confused because once you turn the skirt inside out the hem will be on the inside.

Add Elastic to Skirt

Cut a piece of elastic 2 inches smaller than your waist measurement. Add the elastic to the skirt.

Let's Make the Racer Back

Grab a racer back top that you already have and use it as the pattern.

Panels for Back of Top

Cut the panels out the back of the top. I used my ruler to measure the panels. I cut one panel in the center of the back and one across. Use the panels you cut out as a pattern for the sheer. Add a half inch seam allowance when you cut out the sheer.

Sew the Seam Allowance Out the Way

Sew the seam allowance out of the way by folding it up and sewing it down.

Sew the Top Together

Pin at sides and sew the top together.

Then finish the armhole by folding it over once, then twice and sew it down.

Sew the Top to the Skirt

Turn the top inside out, then upside down and pin the top to the skirt. Sew it and you are done!!
