DIY Rustic Magnetic Chalkboard

Step by step process on how to make a rustic magnetic chalkboard.

Start with 1" x 4" board. Cut two pieces at a 45 degree angle on each end with a overall length of 29.5". Cut two more pieces at a 45 degree angle on each end with a overall length of 20".

Glue the 4 corner pieces together with wood glue and allow time to dry.

Now that the glue has dried we can start painting. What I did was spray paint the frame white to begin with. Then spray painted random spots black allow time to dry. It is a good idea to take a picture at this point because later when we are sanding we want to sand those specific spots we painted different colors to make it look more rustic.

Paint the wood frame the final color of your choice.

Cut out a metal 18" x 24" piece out thin sheet metal. I used galvanized metal so that it doesn't rust and is magnetic.

Paint one side of the metal sheet with flat black chalkboard spray paint and allow to dry.

Now that the chalkboard has dried apply glue to the chalkboard and place centered on the back of the wooden frame allow time to dry.

Now that everything has dried you can now sand down frame to make the frame more rustic. Start by lightly sanding with 220 grit in random places refer back to pictures that were taken in step 3. Continue to sand until you have reached the desired rustic look you are going for.

Drill three 1/8" holes in base refer to picture. The first hole you will want to drill centered at 10" from the outer edge. The second and third hole drill 4.25" from outer edge on each side. Now that the holes have been drilled install knobs.

Install one saw tooth picture frame hanger on the back of the wooden frame centered at the top of the frame. The last thing I recommend is adding some velcro on the back of the chalkboard to prevent scratching the wall.
