DIY Punk Style Kid Over-The-Top Hat With Spiral Ball Drop

Get ready to turn heads with this DIY Punk Style Over-The-Top Hat, a bold and imaginative creation designed especially for kids who love to stand out at cosplay events, school functions, theme parties, and maker fairs! This is not just a costume accessory—it's an interactive headpiece that fuses creativity, engineering, and play into one wearable masterpiece.
What sets this hat apart is its built-in spiral ball drop mechanism—a cleverly crafted spiral track wrapped around the hat that lets a small ball roll down dramatically from the top to the brim, using the magic of gravity and motion. Styled with punk-inspired elements like faux hex bolts, wrench cutouts, gear shapes, and metallic finishes, this hat captures the spirit of rebellious fun and mechanical creativity.
Supplies

Digital Design (Optional)-Laptop or PC with Autodesk Fusion 360
Main Structure -Thick Cardboard Sheets (3–5 mm), Compass or round objects to trace circles
Cutting Tools - Cutter, Scissors
Joining Tools-Glue Gun with Glue Sticks
Measuring Tools-Ruler, Compass, Protractor
Decoration & Details-Acrylic Spray Paint (Gold, Black, Metallic)
Mechanical Fun Element-Small Plastic Ball (~20 mm)
Finishing Touches-Safety Gloves, Mask (for spray painting)
3D Design Ideation (Fusion 360 or Sketching)

Open a new sketch on the Top Plane.
From the origin, draw 3 concentric circles: 280 mm, 150 mm, and 145 mm in diameter.
Select the ring area between the 150 mm and 280 mm circles and extrude it 3 mm (brim of the hat).
Select the 145 mm circle and extrude 3 mm as a new body (crown base).
Move the crown (145 mm disc) 200 mm upward.
Extrude the ring between 150 mm and 145 mm upward by 200 mm, connecting the crown and brim into a solid cylinder (the body of the hat).
Use Fillet or Chamfer if needed to round edges for realism.
Add Spiral Ball Path (Helix Feature)

Use Helix or Coil tool in Fusion 360 to generate a spiral path around the cylindrical body of the hat.
Copy-paste the helix and move the second one 2 mm upward to form the top boundary.
Use the Combine Tool with Cut operation to subtract the spiral body from the hat, forming a groove.
Align the top of the helix with the top crown so the ball drops naturally.
Create Base Hat Structure (Cardboard)

Cut the brim: A circular ring with outer dia 280 mm and inner dia 145 mm.
Cut the crown base: A 145 mm circle.
For the cylinder body, cut a rectangular strip 500 mm x 200 mm, roll it, and glue it to form a cylinder.
Attach the 145 mm circle to the top of the cylinder and mount it in the brim ring using glue gun.
Create the Spiral Track Manually

On cardboard, draw a spiral that goes from the top to bottom along a 200 mm height.
Carefully cut the spiral out. This is the base of the track.
Cut thin cardboard strips (~20 mm height) to form side rails for the track.
Stick these strips along the edges of your spiral to prevent the ball from falling.
Fix the spiral track securely around the hat using a glue gun.
Decorate and Paint

Draw and cut hexagons, spanner tools, nuts, and gear shapes from cardboard or foam.
Glue them around the body and brim of the hat.
Use gold or silver metallic acrylic spray paint to give a steampunk punk vibe.
Paint spiral track in contrast color for visual pop.
Let it dry thoroughly in a well-ventilated area.
