DIY Parchment Paper: Two Different Types

image.jpg

Hi! I’ve done this probably twenty-five times now, and the end product is always a little different! The paper you make can range from being almost white, to an almost black. One time I let my paper set in the water for three days, and the edges of the paper were completely black, and very brittle (as seen above). Once they are dried and flattened, you can 100% still use them as printing paper, (I like to draw maps on them, or just make my school papers look AMAZING!)

IF YOU WANT TEXTURED PAPER, (DARK SPOTS, MOST LIKELY DARKER PAPER,) GO TO STEP 1.

IF YOU WANT A SMOOTHER PAPER, (NO DARK SPOTS, MORE EVEN COLOR AND MORE PREDICTABLE) GO TO STEP 6.

Supplies

  • Paper, I use LTR size, but it doesn’t matter.
  • Frozen blueberries.
  • 2-4 tablespoons coffee grounds (I said 2-4, but it really doesn’t matter: More coffee = Darker paper, Less Coffee = lighter paper)
  • Tray.
  • water.
  • A few days of patience, depending on how dark you want your paper.
  • Tea (Optional) for step 5

Start

  1. Put 1-3 cups of water in a kettle and bring it to a boil, I recommend that you don’t take it off the stove until the water boils.
  2. While the water is heating, pour 10-20 FROZEN blueberries on to the paper. (The blueberries tend to darken the paper in some spots, and I haven’t had any purple paper yet!)
  3. Pour in the water and move the blueberries around. They should be giving off color.
  4. Now dump the coffee grounds on and mix them around with a brush.
  5. Let it sit. The following steps will be updates on what my example looks like, and how long it’s been since it was started

The picture on the left is what it looked like when started, and the picture on the right is the current one. It’s no not much darker than when it was started.

These are four of them I made at the same time, all differing in color, the darkest on the bottom and the lightest on top.

They was finished after 4 days.

Type number 2.

For this one, all you need to do is make some tea or coffee, (without grounds) and brush it onto the paper. OR do the tray technique, (I like the tray better).

If you want to make the parchment in the tray, go back to step 1, just don’t use blueberries and do not put the coffee grounds onto the paper. If If you do not wont to use a tray, go to the next step.

this step is pretty simple:

  1. brush on the coffee or tea. If you want you might even be able to make a design on it (all I did was press down a mug onto the edge of mine).

It is finished!

FUN FACT

FUN FACT: YOU DON’T NEED TO Burn the edges of your “parchment paper!” If you let the paper soak in the coffee/tea, it naturally creates the “burn marks” without any matches!
