To make this cute DIY key decoration shaped like a mini sombrero, gather the following items:

  1. Hot Glue Gun (and glue sticks)
  2. Scissors
  3. Twine or Jute Rope – for wrapping and creating the hat texture
  4. Toothpicks – used to shape the top of the hat
  5. Cotton Pad or Cardboard Circle – for the base of the hat
  6. A Decorative Patch – like the mermaid-scale bow shown in the example

Instructions:

  1. Take a few toothpicks and cut them in half using scissors or small pliers.
  2. Take your cotton pad (or cardboard circle) and glue the cut toothpick pieces vertically onto the center of the pad. Arrange them in a small teepee or cone shape – this will form the top of the hat.
  3. Use the hot glue gun to securely attach each toothpick to the base and to one another at the top.

Instructions:

  1. Take one flat cotton pad and cut it into four equal wedge-shaped pieces.
  2. One by one, glue each piece between the toothpicks, shaping them to form a curved, sloping wall.
  3. Use the hot glue gun to attach the edges of each cotton piece to the toothpicks and to the base pad. Overlap them slightly if needed to cover gaps.
  4. The result should look like a shallow dome or a mini cone surrounding the center – this will give your sombrero its iconic rounded shape.

Wrap the Hat With Twine or Rope

Instructions:

  1. Start at the very top of the hat (tip of the cone).
  2. Apply a small amount of hot glue and begin wrapping the twine or rope tightly in a spiral, working your way downward.
  3. Continue wrapping around the curved cotton sections and then down to the flat base, gluing as you go to keep it secure.
  4. Try to keep the twine lines close together without gaps for a clean finish.

Instructions:

  1. Once the twine wrapping is finished and secure, glue your decorative element (like the mermaid-scale bow) to the front or side of the hat using hot glue.
  2. To make it a keychain, take a small loop of twine, thread, or a metal jump ring and glue or tie it securely to the top or back of the sombrero.
  3. Attach this loop to a keyring or clip.
  4. Make sure everything is firmly attached and let the glue cool and dry completely.
