DIY Mid Century Modern Standing / Floating Desk | Woodworking How To

This week we built a mid century modern wall hanging standing desk! This desk is made from 1/2" plywood and Walnut.

Cut Your Plywood

Follow the cut diagram above and make all your plywood cuts.

Assemble Desk Box

Start with your GREY, RED, and BLUE parts. We are going to assemble a rectangular box. Follow the diagram above for reference. Use super glue to temporarily hold the pieces together. Use 1/4" dowels to reinforce the joints. The GREY pieces will the back of the box. These two are glue and screwed together to make a 1” thick back piece.

Sand & Route Edges

Sand your box smooth using 120 grit sand paper. Use a router or sander to round over the sides of the box as picture below. We used a 3/4" round over bit in a router table.

Drawer Assembly

Assemble the drawer using the color diagram as reference. You can assemble the drawer box using screws or dowels. Leave the Walnut piece off the front until a future step.

Making Drawer Front

Grab your piece of walnut and create the drawer front. Measure the opening of your main box and cut the walnut to those dimensions. Drill a 1 1/2" hole in the center of the board. Use a 3/4" chamfer bit to route a hand hold inside the hole.

Attach Drawer Front

Attach the Walnut drawer front to the drawer. We put the drawer inside the box temporarily super glue the drawer front on.

Back Panel

Attach the box to your back panel. The back panel is represented by the GREEN board in the diagram. Use plenty of 1 1/4" screws to attach the panel.

Coat Hooks

Attach the coat hooks to the back panel. We made small blocks from the left over walnut as the coat hooks. We super glued them in place, then screwed them in from behind.

Finishing

Sand everything with 220 grit sand paper. Finish the entire piece with your choice of clear coat. We used Waterlox for this project.

Attaching to the Wall

Attach the desk to the wall with 3” screws. Be sure to check for level and that you are screwing into a stud. We chose the height of 43”, but this is entirely up to you.
