DIY Metal Clay. No Kiln - No Torch- No Problem

I love metal clays and have always had a difficult time trying to get all the components together plus they can be very challenging requiring a kiln or a torch to complete projects and hours of time.

After working with resins and clays for many years one day I was working with QuickCure Clay and loved the fact that it cures without a kiln which if you have ever worked with traditional clays you know what the time frame is for projects to get completed. I could use this new way to Clay and get sculptures done in hours not days and with the added benefit of UV resin my pieces could look glazed.
Well over in my containers there were my metal powders from my cold cast bronze days and in the same bin was my metal clays that unfortunately had dried up harder than a rock so there went that money down the drain. Then like magic the light bulb got brighter.

Could this work? Take this fabulous new QuickCure Clay , incorporate the metal powders , cure it , polish it , then in a matter of moments would it reveal a beautiful metal finish?

Well let’s see. It worked for cold cast bronze. That process was just resin and metal powders mixed and poured in a mold and then polished. So why not? QuickCure Clay

Metal Powders ( very fine )

Small portion cups

Old metal spoon or pallet knife ( to help in blending)

Craft heat tool or hot plate

Gloves

Dust Mask

Eye protection

Sculpting tools and silicone molds

Baby powder or cornstarch

Soft metal brush

Grinder with buffing will or rotary tool with buffer

Polishing rouge for metals

Large ceramic tile to work on or something heat resistant.

Follow Ranger Inks QuickCure Clay instructions and work in a well ventilated area and wear gloves at all times when handling clay. Etc.

When creating with QuickCure Clay the possibilities are endless. There are lots of tips for using the clay this is just one of them. Have fun and work safe.

Only mix the metal powders and clay together when you are ready to use. Avoid doing in advance some metals cause the clay to cure prematurely. Silver doesn’t react as fast. Others will harden in a day or so without heat so be advised.

With your dust mask, gloves and eyewear on.

Take a small piece of QCC and place on your ceramic tile. Spoon out the metal power approximately the same size as the clay. Begin incorporating the powdered metal into the clay. The clay should be well blended and no marbling. It will not be sticky and maybe showing separation. This is what you want now add just a tiny bit more clay and blend very well. It is now ready for making things.

Gather your molds, baby powder, and heat source.

Take small portions of clay and press into your dusted mold. Then on the tile start heating the clay.

Note: work in a well ventilated area and do not pickup finished pieces till they have cooled. The clay should be handled with gloves and only cured in a heat safe area.

Tweezers can help hold the pieces when curing.

It only takes seconds.

Let cool , let’s move on to polishing.

You won’t believe how hard the pieces get. It is truly a game changer.

Keep hair up, clothes tight and use lots of caution if using power tools. You do all of these projects at your own risk.

With a wire brush do a light scrub to your pieces. Now add some rouge to the buffing wheel and holding tightly begin polishing.
Turn off tools after done polishing.

Wipe the project with a fiber cloth and your done.

You should do tests till you get the right blend for your project.
