Have you ever lost your keys, wallet, or sunglasses? Well not anymore because this week we’re making a simple magnetic hanger for your keys, with a little shelf for your wallet and whatever else you’d like to put on it.
Materials and Tools
MATERIALS:
1x12 Oak Board
1x2 Oak Board
Keyhole Hangers: https://amzn.to/2uFTkgf
Neodymium Magnets: https://amzn.to/2Uc75CA
Varathane Stain: https://amzn.to/2WH3GZ8
TOOLS:
Miter Saw: https://thd.co/2AM0D8H
Drill (Tool Only): https://amzn.to/2D4DhMG
Batteries: https://amzn.to/2G4NUmA
Cutting the Shelf

The first thing I did was cutting off a 3 1/2" wide piece off the large oak board. This would be the larger shelf.
Mark Your Holes
![Mark Holes.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FBX/DHQG/JTYNA8A2/FBXDHQGJTYNA8A2.jpg&filename=Mark Holes.jpg)
I marked the places where I would drill the recesses for the magnets.
Tape and Drill
![Tape Forstner Bit.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FEL/ZA9Y/JTYNA8CO/FELZA9YJTYNA8CO.jpg&filename=Tape Forstner Bit.jpg)
![Drill Holes.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FK2/8N7T/JTYNA0GT/FK28N7TJTYNA0GT.jpg&filename=Drill Holes.jpg)
![Magnet.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FQH/XMIT/JTYNA0KJ/FQHXMITJTYNA0KJ.jpg&filename=Magnet.jpg)
I taped off the Forstner bit to make sure I don't drill too deep. Masking tape works great for this.
Cut the Backboard
![Mark Excess.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FJW/Z592/JTYNA0MM/FJWZ592JTYNA0MM.jpg&filename=Mark Excess.jpg)
![Cut Excess.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FBV/5L1M/JTYNA0FU/FBV5L1MJTYNA0FU.jpg&filename=Cut Excess.jpg)
After drilling all the holes for the magnets, I figured out the length I wanted the backboard to be and cut that to length.
Mount the Shelf
![Drill Countersink Holes.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FYS/CEAK/JTYNA8NO/FYSCEAKJTYNA8NO.jpg&filename=Drill Countersink Holes.jpg)
![Mark More Holes.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/F0J/K442/JTYNA8NW/F0JK442JTYNA8NW.jpg&filename=Mark More Holes.jpg)
![Screws.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FUV/X8LX/JTYNA8PM/FUVX8LXJTYNA8PM.jpg&filename=Screws.jpg)
Next, it was time to mount the shelf, to do this I clamped it on and then used a square to mark where the holes needed to be.
Then I used a countersink bit to drill the holes for the screws and then screwed the shelf onto the back.
Sunglasses Shelf
![Cut Shelf.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FPR/CKAF/JTYNA0FY/FPRCKAFJTYNA0FY.jpg&filename=Cut Shelf.jpg)
![Getting There.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FIZ/IN22/JTYNA0H6/FIZIN22JTYNA0H6.jpg&filename=Getting There.jpg)
To make the sunglasses shelf I just cut it to length and screwed it through the back just like the lower shelf.
Add the Heyhole Hangers

![Chisel Edges.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FQM/HTJ1/JTYNA0FR/FQMHTJ1JTYNA0FR.jpg&filename=Chisel Edges.jpg)
![Screw In Hangers.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FYY/U132/JTYNA8XZ/FYYU132JTYNA8XZ.jpg&filename=Screw In Hangers.jpg)
First I marked the hanger locations, then drilled in the areas where they go with a Forstner bit to make the recesses. I cleaned up the recesses with a small chisel and then screwed in the hangers.
Stain
![Apply Finish.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FFW/LW4R/JTYNA0FO/FFWLW4RJTYNA0FO.jpg&filename=Apply Finish.jpg)
The next thing I did was stain it, I used Varathane Ebony Stain, but you can use whatever color stain you prefer to match your walls.
Glue in the Magnets
![Glue In Magnets.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FFJ/MIPV/JTYNA0JF/FFJMIPVJTYNA0JF.jpg&filename=Glue In Magnets.jpg)

I just used some Clear Gorilla Glue to mount in my magnets.
Final Finish
![Spray Polyeurathane.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/F88/X6HR/JTYNA9GH/F88X6HRJTYNA9GH.jpg&filename=Spray Polyeurathane.jpg)
![Spray Polyurethane 2.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/F5C/F37L/JTYNA9GR/F5CF37LJTYNA9GR.jpg&filename=Spray Polyurethane 2.jpg)
To give it it's final finish I used glossy spray Polyurethane from Varathane to give it a nice glossy finish.
Hang It Up
![Mark Holes To Hang.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/F08/3MWO/JTYNA9R9/F083MWOJTYNA9R9.jpg&filename=Mark Holes To Hang.jpg)
![Put In Screws.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/F1D/TISR/JTYNA9RO/F1DTISRJTYNA9RO.jpg&filename=Put In Screws.jpg)
![Hang.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FQ6/0KUX/JTYNA0KH/FQ60KUXJTYNA0KH.jpg&filename=Hang.jpg)
To hang it up, I just marked my holes and just screwed screws right into the drywall, I was originally gonna use drywall anchors, but I didn't really need them so I decided to skip them.
You're Done
![Put Up Keys.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FN7/9HM2/JTYNA9U8/FN79HM2JTYNA9U8.jpg&filename=Put Up Keys.jpg)
![You're Done.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FIC/7UIM/JTYNA9VD/FIC7UIMJTYNA9VD.jpg&filename=You're Done.jpg)
And that's it, you're done! Now you have a place you always know you can go to to get your essentials for leaving the house.
