DIY Laundry Detergent

Making your own homemade laundry detergent is a very satisfying process! This recipe for homemade laundry detergent will take you less than 30 minutes, and can be made right in your very own kitchen. Cheap and very effective, this detergent is ideal for those who normally buy in bulk, as it makes approximately 100 medium size washes. With cheap and easy as our objective, the ingredients for this recipe can all be found in the laundry aisle of your neighborhood grocery store, and can be purchased for less than $20 dollars.

This is safe for use in HE washers.

Materials

Measuring instructions: A regular-size load of laundry will require slightly less than a ½ cup but a large load of laundry will require a full ½ cup

Ingredients:

  • 4lb Box of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
  • 4lb Box of Arm And Hammer Baking Soda
  • 4lb Box of 20 Mule Team Borax
  • Oxi Clean (3lb container)
  • 4 Fels Naptha Laundry Soap
  • 2 Downy UnStopables
  • Garbage bag
  • Cheese grater
  • 2 gallon container to store your soap
  • ½ cup measuring scoop (Or use one from Oxi Clean container)

Pour Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, Arm & Hammer Baking Soda, 20 Mule Team Borax, Oxi Clean and both containers of Downy UnStopables into the empty garbage bag. This will take about 5 minutes.

TIP: Some ingredients come out of the box in clumps, be sure to break these up before proceeding to next step.

Using the cheese grater, grate the Fels Naptha Laundry Soap into a separate container until all 4 bars are grated into fine slivers. This step will take the longest, so be sure to set aside about 15 minutes to fully grate each bar of soap.

Empty the finely grated Fels Naptha Laundry Soap into the garbage bag with the previous ingredients.

Twist the top of the garbage bag to keep all the ingredients in the bag.

Gently move the garbage bag around to mix all the ingredients. This should take 1-2 minutes.

TIP: Sitting on the ground may be the best way to approach this.

After mixing the ingredients, carefully transfer the mixture into the container that you chose to store your soap in.

Place measuring scoop inside storage container for future use. The scoop from your Oxi Clean can be used as your measuring cup.
