DIY Karambit Out of a Saw Blade Without CNC
How to make a karambit (Indonesian fighting knife) out of a used saw blade by hand for us people who don't have and don't want a CNC machine.
Supplies
Supplies -
- Table Saw Blade
- 550 Paracord
- A Few Spare Hours
Tools -
- Marker / Pen
- Face Shield Or Safety Goggles (Preferably Face Shield)
- Vice Or Clamps To Hold Your Knife
- Die Grinder With Cut Off Wheel (Or Hacksaw)
- Drill With 3/16" and 1/2-3/4" Bit
- Files (Round And Flat)
- Sand Paper 80-320 Grit (Or Higher If You Want A Mirror Finish Knife)
Sketch Out Your Plan
Before cutting anything, you must know what shape you will make your karambit. There are a few different styles, but this is the one I chose. I made a paper cutout of my knife to ensure it was the right size for me; then, I traced it onto an old saw blade. After sketching your pattern onto your saw blade, you can move on to the next step.
Cut Out the Shape of Your Knife
Using your die grinder (or hacksaw), cut out the rough shape of your karambit. Then use your files to get the exact shape you desire. After this, you can sand the flat sides of your knife to make it nice and smooth. If you want a mirror-finish knife, you will have to either have a saw blade that is not rusty or sand the knife down until it is perfectly smooth. I was too lazy to sand it smooth, so I'll just say I was going for a "rustic" look.
Drill the Holes in the Knife
For a karambit to be a karambit, it must have a finger ring hole in the back of the handle. To make this, I drilled a 1/2" hole, filed it bigger until it fit my finger, and sanded it smooth. Then you need to drill the holes to attach your paracord. You can do this with your 3/16"drill bit. I drilled three small holes but ended up not needing the middle one.
Heat Treat Your Blade and Sand It Smooth
Heat treat your knife by heating it red hot and then quenching it in a drum of oil. Then you heat it until it becomes blue and quench it again. After this, you should sand your knife smooth again.
Attach Paracord Handle
To attach your handle, you thread one end of your cord through the first small hole you drilled, leaving about an inch left over. Then you wrap the entire handle with paracord, covering the leftover inch from before. Then once your handle is covered in the cord, string some through the small hole in the back, cut off about an inch, and tuck it into the handle.
