DIY How to Make a Quilted Sewing Machine Cover - Bravo Dada! Sewing Tutorial
Hi everyone!
In this sewing tutorial Iβm going to show you how to make a quilted sewing machine cover. This cover is very helpful to protect your sewing machine from dust and light.
Important note: I use the metric system and make the exact conversion from cm to inches in the hope of helping. Please adapt these measurements to your ruler.
Hope you enjoy this tutorial. π₯°πͺ‘
Supplies
NOTE: Dimensions in inches are approximated.
The materials and techniques I used are the ones I thought were the best for me as a self-taught creative seamstress. It doesnβt mean they are the best for you, so feel free to use your creativity and make it your own! You can adjust the measurements as you like and also add pockets or other features.
Seam allowance:
- 1.5cm | 0.6β³
Fabric measurements:
- 4 fabric pieces for the front and the back (2 for the outside fabric and 2 for the lining): 47cm | 18.5β x 29cm | 11.4β
- 4 fabric pieces for the sides (2 for the outside fabric and 2 for the lining): 29cm | 11.4β x 23cm | 9β
- 2 fabric pieces for the top (1 for the outside fabric and 1 for the lining): 47cm | 18.5β x 23cm | 9β
- 1 piece of fabric and 1 piece of fusible interfacing for the handle: 18cm | 7β x 10cm | 4β
Polyester batting measurements:
- 2 for the front and back panel pieces: 45cm | 17.7β x 27cm | 10.6β
- 2 for the side panel pieces: 27cm | 10.6β x 21cm | 8.3β
- 1 panel piece for the top: 45cm | 17.7β x 21cm | 8.3β
Needle sizes:
- 9/14
- 110/18
You will also need:

- Quilting Ruler
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Corner and Edge Shaper
- Sewing Thread
- Seam Ripper
- Heat Erasable Pens
- Measuring Tape
- Tape
- Iron
- Ironing Board
- Sewing Machine
Measure Your Sewing Machine
My sewing machine measurements:
- Depth: 18cm | 7β
- Width: 42cm | 16.5β
- Height: 24cm | 9.4β
Measure your sewing machine:
- Measure the depth, width and height of the widest part of your sewing machine. Add 5cm | 2β to these measurements.
- This measurement (+ 5cm | 2β) already takes into account the quilting shrinkage and 0.6" of seam allowance.
Quilt the Outer Fabric Pieces
- Mark your quilt line diagonally with a heat erasable pen. Leave 5cm | 2" between the lines.
- Place the batting into the center of the wrong side of the fabric pieces. Sew both pieces together (fabric and batting) before quilting (optional).
- Adjust the stitch length on your sewing machine according to your preferences. Use a 90/14 sized needle to sew this first part of the project.
- Now sew your parallel quilting lines on all the outer fabrics.
Make and Sew the Handle to the Top Fabric
- Cut the fabric for the handle.
- Apply the fusible interfacing with the iron to the wrong side of the fabric. Make sure the side with the glue is facing the fabric.
- Fold the fabric for the handle as shown in the images. Fold over 1cm | 25/64" of fabric on each side and press it with the iron. Fold the longest side in half and press it. Then open the fabric and fold both sides in to meet the middle line and press it again.
- Sew all around with a seam allowance of 0.3cm | 1/8". Don't forget to back stitch at the beginning and at the end of every seam.
- Mark 2cm | 7/8" on each side of the handle and trace an X. Center it on the top fabric piece and push both sides slightly to the middle.
- Sew the handle into the top fabric piece. Use a 110/18 sized needle.
- Now iron the quilted fabric pieces to remove the lines of the marking pen.
Press and Sew the Outer Fabric Pieces Together
- Place the right sides of the fabric facing each other and clip them together as shown in the images.
- Sew with a seam allowance of 1.5cm | 5/8".
- Trick: mark the seam allowance with tape to guide you while sewing.
- Now place the right side of the top fabric facing the right sides of the cover and hold your fabric together with clips.
- While sewing the top piece make sure to leave 1.5cm | 5/8" without stitches / seam at the beginning and the end of each side / corner of the fabric.
- Trim the extra fabric.
- Turn the fabric right side out.
Sew the Lining Pieces Together
- Sew the lining the same way as you did for the outside fabric. Leave an opening in one of the longest sides of the top fabric.
- Trim off the excess fabric with zig zag scissors or normal fabric scissors.
Sew the Outer Fabric to the Lining
- Turn the lining inside out and the outer fabric right side out, then fit the outside fabric inside the lining.
- Line up all the corners and sew all the way around.
- Turn the sewing machine cover right side out by pulling it through the gap you left in the lining.
- Press the sewing machine cover, paying special attention to the edges.
- Sew the opening closed.
Top Stitch the Sewing Machine Cover
- Use a 110/18 sized needle to top stitch the sewing machine cover as there are several layers of fabric, lining and batting so the needle won't break.
- Top stitch the bottom of the sewing machine cover all the way around with a seam allowance of 0.7cm | 9/32".
- Clip both the lining and the outer fabric and then top stitch them together as shown in the images.
Finished Sewing Machine Cover
- It's done! Now you can cover your sewing machine and protect it from dust and light!
Happy sewing! π₯°πͺ‘
