DIY How to Make Small and Large Fabric Corner Bookmarks - Bravo Dada! Sewing Tutorial
Hi everyone!
In this sewing tutorial Iβm going to show you how to make small and large fabric corner bookmarks. If you love books and want to sew your own corner bookmark, this sewing project is perfect for you. These bookmarks also make a great gift for friends and family.
Important note: I use the metric system and make the exact conversion from cm to inches in the hope of helping. Please adapt these measurements to your ruler.
Hope you enjoy this tutorial. π₯°πͺ‘
Supplies
NOTE: Dimensions in inches are approximated.
The materials and techniques I used are the ones I thought were the best for me as a self-taught creative seamstress. It doesnβt mean they are the best for you, so feel free to use your creativity and make it your own! You can adjust the measurements as you like and also add other features.
You will need the corner bookmark templates attached (print actual size).
LARGE CORNER BOOKMARK
Fabric measurements:
- 4 fabric pieces: 11cm | 4 21/64β x 11cm | 4 21/64β
Heavy-weight fusible interfacing measurements:
- 2 pieces of fusible interfacing: 11cm | 4 21/64β x 11cm | 4 21/64β
SMALL CORNER BOOKMARK
Fabric measurements:
- 4 fabric pieces: 7cm | 2 3/4β x 7cm | 2 3/4β
Heavy-weight fusible interfacing measurements:
- 2 pieces of fusible interfacing: 7cm | 2 3/4β x 7cm | 2 3/4β
Seam allowance:
- 0.7cm | 9/32β
Needle size:
- 90/14
You will also need:
- Scissors
- Wonder Clips
- Quilting Ruler
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Corner and Edge Shaper
- Sewing Thread
- Seam Ripper
- Heat Erasable Pens
- Measuring Tape
- Iron
- Ironing Board
- Clover Roll & Press
- Sewing Machine
Apply the Fusible Interfacing
- Cut the fabrics and the fusible interfacing for your bookmark.
- Trick: reduce bulk by trimming away the seam allowance from the fusible interfacing before applying it. Don't cut the fusible interfacing without the seam allowance if the fabric is lightweight and frays like the one in this tutorial.
- Apply the fusible interfacing with the iron to the wrong side of the outer fabric. Make sure the side with the glue is facing the fabric.
Make the Front of the Bookmark
- Use the templates to cut the inner and outer fabric of the front of the bookmarks and to mark the stitching lines. To mark the lines use a heat erasable pen.
- The seam allowance is 0.7cm | 9/32" for both the large and small bookmarks.
- Place the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Align the raw edges.
- Adjust the stitch length on your sewing machine according to your preferences. Use a 90/14 sized needle.
- Sew the front of the bookmarks as shown in the images.
- Trim the excess fabric notching out V-shapes from the seam allowance paying attention to not cut through the stitching.
- Turn them right side out.
- Edge stitch the curves 0.1cm | 3/64" away from the edge.
Sew the Front and the Back Pieces Together
- Mark the stitching lines and the opening with a heat erasable pen. Leave an opening of 6cm | 2 23/64" in the large bookmark and of 3cm | 1 3/16" in the small bookmark to turn them right side out.
- Place the right sides of the outer fabrics of the bookmarks facing each other, as shown in the images, and sew them together.
- Trim the excess fabric.
Turn the Bookmarks Right Side Out
- With the Roll & Press, press the seams open.
- Turn the bookmarks right side out.
- Press the bookmarks.
Edge Stich the Bookmarks
- Edge stitch the back of the bookmarks 0.1cm | 3/64" away from the edge.
- Don't edge stich the front of the bookmarks because they won't adjust well to the corner of the books.
Finished Corner Bookmarks
It's done! Happy sewing! π₯°πͺ‘
