DIY Hot Glue Dice

unnamed.jpg

This is a hallow dice that I created for an engineering project report. This is perfect for homemade games or making special DnD dice to fit your theme. There are several things I would recommend you try differently. Please read full project.

Supplies

For this project you will need:

Thick popsicle sticks

Scissors

Ruler

Paint

Sandpaper

Masking tape

Hot glue or Epoxy

Creating the Mold

The First step of this project is to create the mold to fit the dice. You could possibly use a 3d printer to make a more stable mold, but if that is inaccessible, use thick popsicle sticks to create even small squares. Mine were made 1 inch in length, but I found I needed to cut them down a bit.

Glue them together through their ends to create a square. If you are using hot glue, use masking tape to reinforce the mold or you will be left holding the popsicle sticks up until the glue has cooled enough. Then add a bottom to the mold to keep the glue from spilling out.

Casting

I recommend using epoxy instead, but either way, fill the mold as much as you can. Take it out slightly before it finished drying or you will be left with popsicle sticks that refuse to come off the dice.

I ended up having to take a knife to pry off the remaining pieces which worked for the most part, but the sides of the die were scuffed and there was still some thin wood left.

Refining

There were several things that I tried when refining the dice to the right shape and size. Sand paper worked wonders for the sides that wood was still left on, but try to avoid it for the rest of the sides. To shape the other sides, use the tip of the hot glue gun to melt high points and smooth it out. Another thing you can try is putting a drop of hot on the side and using a popsicle stick to press it flat.

Paint will stick to the dice a lot better than pen does, but try to make divots with the tip of the glue gun for the paint to rest.

Enjoy!
