I will be teaching you how to make a homemade thermometer that goes up when it's hot and down when it´s cold.
Supplies

- Rubbing Alcohol
- Water
- Play-do
- straw
- test tube
- Food coloring (preferably a dark color)
Starting Off

Fill the Test tube with equal amounts of water and hand sanitizer. don´t fill it up more than halfway.
Adding Some Color
![IMG_20230131_125136.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FS3/1R56/LDN3Y1SE/FS31R56LDN3Y1SE.jpg&filename=IMG_20230131_125136.jpg)
Next fill your tube with food coloring, you want it to be dark so you can see it at the end.
Making It Work
![IMG_20230131_125310.jpg](/proxy/?url=https://content.instructables.com/FL3/L3JC/LDN3Y1SK/FL3L3JCLDN3Y1SK.jpg&filename=IMG_20230131_125310.jpg)
Next, you want to put the straw in the tube and then put the play-do around the straw at the opening of the tube, making sure it is air-tight.
Testing Your Thermometer

Now test your thermometer by putting it into a cup of hot water, and watch as the alcohol displaces the air, moving up the straw. I used alcohol in the thermometer because alcohol expands more than water, creating a more noticeable effect.
