DIY Height Adjustable Standing Desks

I spend many hours per day just sitting at my table, which is uncomfortable after a while. So I came with idea, it would be great to work standing sometimes. But as I saw the prices of brand new adjustable desks I decided to make it myself rather.

• Three-position two-circuit switch
• Linear Actuator (Stroke Length: 400mm) 2pcs
• Wire
• Screws
• Paint
• Existing desk
• 12V 5A power supply

For the base structure I have chosen 25mm x 25mm x 2mm square section steel closed profile. For the sliding item I used a 30mm x 30mm x 2mm square profile, because its inner dimension matches for the other profile's outer dimension pretty well.

I cut some square pieces from metal for the fixing tabs and welded them to the frame. The top items slide on the bottom vertical legs.

After welding I painted them with two layers black paint, and they got plastic plug to the end holes. Finally I built in the actuators with screws.

I put together the table and the frame and fixed with screws, then installed the power supply and the switch and made the wiring.

According to the specification of the actuator their load capacity is 1500 N. I tested them with a regulated laboratory switching power supply and it showed 3-4 amps during the lifting phase.

In my experience the are strong enough to lift the desk with monitors. The total lifting time is about 90 seconds.

As you can see in the video my treadmill height fits to the standing desktop. So I can walk during work :-).

The total cost is still far away from the price of a brand new adjustable desk.
