DIY Heated Mat for Your Aquatic Turtles

Hi everyone! If you love your pets as much as I do, you probably want to keep them comfortable and healthy, especially during colder months. I have two adorable aquatic turtles, Hikari and Sora, who mean the world to me. Since moving out of my parents' house, they have been my constant companions. One of the most important aspects of their care is maintaining the right water temperature.
Aquatic turtles are ectothermic, meaning their body temperature depends on their environment. For most species, water should be kept between 75°F and 82°F (24°C - 28°C) to support digestion, immunity, and overall well-being. If the water is too cold, their metabolism slows down, making them more susceptible to illness. To ensure my turtles stay warm and happy, I decided to build my own DIY heated mat using my electronics knowledge. This type of heater is commonly used for reptiles and even small mammals like hamsters in cold weather. The heated mat is placed underneath the container that holds the pet, providing gentle and consistent warmth without direct contact with the water.
Supplies

Materials Needed
- Metal mesh (to ensure structural integrity and even heat distribution)
- 12V heating cable
- Temperature controller
- Electrical tape
- 12V power supply (charger)
- Thick plastic bag (optional)
Attach the Heating Cable to the Mesh

Using electrical tape, attach the heating cable to the metal mesh in a serpentine pattern. This ensures even heat distribution. Make sure both ends of the cable are positioned on one side for easy electrical connections. The mesh should be approximately 4 inches by 12 inches (10cm x 30cm).
Waterproof the Setup (Optional)

Place the entire assembly inside a thick plastic bag. If desired, seal the area around the cable connections with transparent tape to protect it from water splashes.
Connect the Temperature Controller

Now, connect the temperature controller to both the 12V power supply and the heating cable according to the wiring diagram. The controller's PCB is typically labeled, making the connection process straightforward.
Install the Temperature Sensor

Plug the temperature probe into the controller and place the sensor inside the water. This will allow the controller to regulate the heat effectively. In my case, I tested the setup with the mesh heating a metal object, and it reached 31.8°C (89.2°F). You can adjust the target temperature using the + and - buttons on the controller to suit your pet’s needs.
With this simple and effective DIY heated mat, your aquatic turtles (or other small pets) can stay warm and comfortable, even in chilly weather. Remember, the heated mat should always be placed underneath the pet’s container, never inside the water. I hope this project helps your pets as much as it has helped mine! If you give it a try, feel free to share your experience in the comments. Stay warm and keep your pets cozy!
