DIY GoPro Pelican Style Case *100% Household Scraps*

I have started doing a lot of traveling with my GoPro. The camera is wonderful; it takes relatively high quality photos and videos and is extremely durable. But the camera is not indestructible.

After looking at some soft and hard sided Pelican cases online, and their price tags, I decided to build my own case. It turned out wonderfully, and cost me nothing but some scraps and spare time.

Materials

- A closed cell foam mat (or other semi rigid foam source)

- A utility knife or other cutting tool

- Hot glue gun

- Belt sander or sand paper

Optional: Fabric, Paint, GoPro Sticker

It is time to sacrifice your favourite (or in this case least favourite) closed cell foamy. Mine has served me faithfully over years of backpacking and canoeing trips, but it has seen better days and needed replacing.

Determine how large you would like your case to be, based on the size of your camera and how tough you need it to be. Then cut out enough foam pieces large enough to fit the camera and enough to pile at least two layers higher than it and decide where you would like the case to open. Mine opens in the middle, so that friction against the camera can hold it shut.

Now is the fun part! :) Time to trace out your camera and begin cutting each layer. Make sure to note the changes in shape each level of the camera and number or organize the foam pieces in some fashion. A utility knife does a great job of cutting, but don't be afraid of using a hot glue gun to melt and shape the foam too.

Hot Glue each layer together, making sure they are firmly attached. Then, press each half of your case under a pile of your favourite manuals and textbooks for 5 to 10min.

Using a belt sander, or piece of sand paper, even out all of the sides and round off the edges and corners.

You can then paint or add fabric to the case as desired.

Add you favorite branding sticker :) and enjoy your new soft sided protective case :)
