DIY Galaxy Epoxy Tabletops

It is always satisfying and cost-effective to complete a project with what we have on hand. This is one of those projects!

Steph's new bed frame created more space underneath for storage, but it also made her existing bedside tables too short!

Rather than build something new, we decided to reimagine the old ones by creating new tops and simply adding a longer pipe to make them the needed height.

Deconstruct Old Tables and Prep

The table we are using previously had a wireless charger in the center, as well as El-wire fitted into routed grooves. We deconstructed the tables, removed the hardware, and then filled in all the grooved areas and charger space with wood filler.

Once the wood filler was dried, the tops were sanded, wiped down with a tack cloth, and then primed with a coat of DecoArt grey gesso.

Prepare Epoxy and Bottom of Tabletop

We used Total Boat epoxy which uses a one-to-one mixing ratio. Follow the instructions and safety precautions for whatever epoxy you use. Plastic mixing cups from Dollar Tree are good for mixing small amounts of epoxy.

Once the epoxy was mixed, I poured some into two small cups. One of the small cups got a bit of Black Diamond mica pigment in silver, one was left clear, and purple mica pigment was added to the larger amount.

Prior to pouring, the backside of the round was protected with tape. I tried out Tyvek tape, Frogtape, and 3M blue painters' tape. At the end of the video, we share what we liked about each of these tapes. The tape helps to be able to easily removed the dried drips from the bottom.

Before pouring, place the wood round on a lazy Susan which makes it much easier to get an even pour and to be sure the sides are covered.

1. Pour and spread the purple epoxy

2. Add the silver epoxy around the round in a spiral pattern

3. Create a "black hole" with a bit of clear epoxy in the center

4. Use a heat gun to remove air bubbles

5. Add glitter in a spiral pattern

6. After the above has dried, add a clear coat of epoxy

Put Table Back Together

The hardware was put back on the underside of the table and a new longer metal pipe screwed into place. The instructions for the concrete base we made can be seen in this post.
