Supplies
- 4.7mm copper tubing
- Asbestos thread
- An old jet torch that doesn't work anymore for parts extraction
- Champagne cork
- Camping gas canister
- Gas regulator
- Silicone tubing
Copper is one of humanity's oldest metals, utilized for over 10,000 years. Its unique property of reducing bacterial growth makes it invaluable for medical and antimicrobial purposes. To begin crafting a compact burner, start by obtaining a copper tube with a 4.5-millimeter diameter and cut a piece roughly 20 centimeters long, optimal for usability.
For precise cutting of the copper tube, employ either a pipe cutter or a saw with carbide-tipped blades. Ensure the tube's edge is smooth and free from sharp edges for safe burner use. Widely employed in construction for its corrosion resistance and reliability, copper tubing, historically used in plumbing systems, remains functional after centuries.
Inspect an old lighter's burner for good condition, cleaning off any dust or dirt as necessary. Lighters, originating in the 16th century with mass production starting in the 19th century, gained popularity due to their convenient ignition system.
Craft a comfortable handle for the burner using a champagne cork. Cut out a piece of suitable size and shape to snugly fit onto the tube, providing a comfortable grip. Cork, known in ancient Egypt for sealing vessels, later became a popular material for various items and crafts.
To connect the burner and tube, solder them together to ensure a robust connection. Utilize a soldering iron with appropriate solder for good adhesion between the copper and metal burner. Soldering alloys for copper may include metals like tin, lead, or silver, each possessing unique properties suited to different tasks.
Connect the tube with the burner to a camping stove gas canister using suitable adapters and hoses. Ensure all connections are airtight and reliable to prevent gas leaks.
Adjust the burner's flame intensity to affect gas ignition temperature, influencing metal processing quality and speed. Therefore, meticulous adjustment of gas supply is crucial for each specific task.
