DIY Faux Gingerbread Ornaments

Hey everyone! I'm back with a lovely Christmas DIY for you all. I actually got the idea for this DIY last year but didn't get it done until this year for some reason. I know, I know, when you typically think of faux gingerbread, the cinnamon dough ornaments come to mind. But these ornaments are different. :) Let's get right to it, shall we?

Author's notes:

This DIY may cause a craving for Christmas cookies of all kinds. Make sure you eat before doing this DIY. ;) Never DIY on an empty stomach. :P

This project involves sharp objects. Please ask for help with this if you're not comfortable with sharp objects.

Here are the materials you'll need for this DIY:

-Paperboard and corrugated cardboard

-Templates

-Pencil

-Paint brushes

-Scissors

-Craft knife

-Embroidery thread

-Puffy paint or glitter glue

-Mod Podge

-Skewer or other tool to help push the string in

-Clear sealer

-Glitter

-Glue stick

Grab your templates and some cardboard and paperboard. Trace around them onto your corrugated cardboard and the paperboard, score, and cut them out. You should have two paperboard gingerbreads and one corrugated cardboard gingerbread. Scoring the pieces helps them grab each other more easily.

Ha.

Anyway, glue the pieces together. You should have a 'sandwich' comprised of paperboard shapes with the corrugated shape in the middle. Now cut a skinny strip and glue it around the 'sandwich'. This hides the layers and just makes it look more like a cookie. Make sure to leave a spot open at the top so you can glue your thread in.

Grab your paints and mix them in a container. To get gingerbread brown, I mixed two parts tangerine, one part brown, and a dash of red. Paint your cookies and let them dry completely.

Here's the fun part. Decorating! :D

Grab your pencil and sketch designs out on your cookies. Go over them with your puffy paint, glitter, glue, or whatever you have on hand. Let them dry and then seal them with Mod Podge followed by clear sealer.

Hahaha.

Now grab your embroidery thread and cut three pieces, then braid it. Cut lengths about 4 inches long and seal the ends with glue so they won't unravel on you. Put a drop of glue in the top of your ornament. Fold the string in half and insert the cut end into the glue. I like to use a skewer or other object to make sure the string is firmly in place. Let it dry and enjoy your ornaments! :D
