DIY Crosshair Laser for Drill Press

drillpress.JPG

I decided to upgrade my old drill press with a crosshair LED Laser module. The Thing is made from 2 parts: the LED module holder positioned on the upright column and the battery holder with a switch fixed to the motor mount of the drill press with tieraps.

I printed all in PETG on my Elegoo Neptune 4 in fine setting.

Supplies

3d printed LED holder

2 LED Laser modules, line type, 5 mW red, 12 mm x 35 mm from Alibaba or amazon

2 M3 x 15 (torx) bolts and nuts

1 M5 x 20 (Torx) bolt and nut

3D printed Battery holder

3D printed Lid

2 M3 x 12 Bolt and nut for the contact points

8mm x 13mm tumble switch

wiring, shrink sleevs, soldering, tiewraps

first print the 3 parts with your 3D printer. I used PETg to have enough toughness to bend the LED clamp around my drill press without breaking.

mount the M3 x 12 screws in the battery holder for the contact points with the bolt heads towards the battery. Clamp the wiring behind the nuts and tighten.

there are holes in the battery holder to feed the wiring through. On the photo, I had wiring going outside because I had too thick wires available. the current STL should work for this now. put the switch throuht the mounting hole and fit the nut loosely. place the switch body horizontal for more easy soldering. solder the wires to the switch. and then turn the switch 90° so it will fit in the slot and tighten the nut. feed the wires through the small hole of the battery holder and solder the 2 LED modules to this wires and put shrink sleeve over the solder..

put a 18650 battery in the holder and see if everything works. Then focus you laser modules and fix the lenses with a little tape. Mount the LED holder loosely around the drill press standing post. mount the LED modules loosely in the holder and attach the battery holder to the drill press. I put a tie wrap to the motor fixture for this but your drill press might have another setup.

now calibrate the setup by turning the clamp ant turning the individual LED modules. the 2 lines shouldbe of similar length / similar distance to the front of the drill press. this is done by turning the whole clamp.

then fix a piece of scrap woood to the drill press and drill a hole with your smallest drill bit. align the laser lines to cross at this point. When you put the drill down, also the shade should be in the middle of the laser lines.

Maybe you have to refocus the LED modules a bit.

then tighten all screws and you are odne.
