DIY Convert Vent Hose Into a Dragon Serpent
I converted a dryer vent hose into a Dragon Serpent prop for my Halloween display.
Supplies
- Plastic Dragon Skull
- foam sheets
- Dryer vent hose
- air dry clay
- plaster wrap
- paper-mache
- newspaper
- masking tape
- any cage wire
- glass pebbles for eyes
- acrylic paint
- hot glue gun
- red light with remote
There are some photos with chicken wire, ignore the chicken wire, I scraped that idea because I was running out of time and found it easier to not use it.
I first shaped the dryer vent hose into the shape i wanted. I then wrapped the end of it with painters/ masking tape with a wire for a tail. I then wrapped wire for where the feet would be. I also added an extra wire and turned it into a hoop , just in case I wanted to stake it into the ground. I taped newspaper around the feet wires and used masking tape to shape feet. I left wire on top of neck sticking out to support plastic skull.
I wrapped wire from around it's jaw onto neck.I also found it easier to open the skull from behind for stability and to add a light. You can cover it up later. Paper mache the entire body. about 3 times. Wait at least a day for it to completely dry before adding dragons skull to it, or it will just dry wobbly.
After it's all dry I use paper clay on entire body. Made it hard as a rock and stable. At this stage once dry, make sure to use a weatherproof , uv protection spray or paint on it like polyurethane and or dryloc. This part is not neccessary unless you place it outside and expose it to natures elements. I then proceeded to hot glue foam sheets to form gills and scales. Then I spray painted the base.
After that dried I hot glued a glass eye I made from a dollar store glass pebble, securing it with air dry clay. Then handpainted with acrylic paint to match. I made sure I left a flap on the back of her , hidden so I can stick the lights in her mouth.
Once I was happy with adding details and painting She was ready for my Halloween display.
Enjoy.
