DIY Coffee Bar

I wanted to repurpose a TV Armoire that I couldn't part with. This DIY Coffee Bar was the answer to free up counterspace in my kitchen and create a relaxing coffee bar feel in my family room.

Supplies

  • TV Cabinet or Armoire - you can repurpose one or go on a flea market search
  • Hanging light fixture - I will show you how to add a plug to a ceiling fixture
  • drill
  • screwdriver
  • replacement plug - (you can find these at a big box store)
  • smart plug - (not a necessity but I like the light to come on at 5:30 in the morning when I stumble in to get my first cup of coffee)
  • extension cord
  • screws to mount bracket for fixture

Drill the Hole for Your Cord

Start by deciding where you would like your fixture to hang. My light hangs directly in the center of the inside of the cabinet but you can decide depending on the width of your light fixture and if you have shelves or items hanging in the back of your cabinet.

Attach Mounting Bracket

Attach the mounting bracket for your fixture using screws. Thread your cord through the hole in the center.

Attach the Light Fixture to the Bracket

This is the most difficult part of this project and would be helpful to have a friend to hold the light while you try to match the holes in the bracket with the fixture. I didn't have any help and was able to manage, so I am sure you can.

Adding a Plug to Your Fixture

Twist the wires and form both into a C shape and attach to the correct screw on your replacement plug and tighten. I am no electrician and will not attempt to act like i know enough to give advice, but this was pretty simple. I followed the instructions that came with my replacement plug to connect the wires to be sure I attached them to the correct screw. Close the plug over the cord and use the screw provided to close the plug.

Attach to a Smart Plug

You may need to use an extension cord or power strip if your cord on your fixture is short. I used a smart plug to connect to the outlet so I can program it to come on as soon as I get up in the morning. The older I get bending over in the morning to plug in my light might make the coffee experience not as enjoyable.

Enjoy Your Light and Decorate ( You May Want a Cup of Coffee!)

I have this coffee bar in my family room, it has given me more counterspace in my kitchen. The coffee bar sets the tone for relaxation in my family room, and you can almost smell it brewing. Hope this gives you instruction and inspiration.
