DIY Bubble Window Doll Display and Travel Bag.
Small Doll display and carry bag. Going to an event or out for a photo shoot - take your doll along and let them see the world…and the world see them. This project is a finished 6x8 top opening bag with D rings to attach strap or handle. Project designed for 4inch dolls like Nendoroid, Obitsu11, YMY 10 and 12, etc.
Supplies
Fabric and thread for cover
Fleece or shearling for liner
heavy weight craft fusible interfacing ( type to make fabric boxes)
zippers (10” for outside, optional: 7” for inner pocket)
plastic fillable ornament halves
trim and 1” elastic
fabric glue
hot glue/ gun
sewing machine
Preparing Front Insert/ Lining
Cut interfacing for front and back and gusset. For this project, front and back are 6.25 x 8.25 and gusset 18”
On front interfacing, trace shape of ornament half so it is centered and 1.5” below top edge.
draw cutting line for window 1/8 inch inside of outline.
on back, glue fleece/shearling.
cut out window - cutting lining and interfacing together.
Prep Back and Optional Zippered Pocket
Optional pocket: cut fabric strip width of bag, and twice length +2”. (This project: 6.25 x 18.25)
on short edges, press 1/4 inch raw edge and fold 1/2 inch and sew close to fold.
place zipper with 1/2 inch gap on left - sew along finished edges to attach zipper - forming a tube. Sew over zipper at righthand edge and trim end of zipper.
position flattened tube over back interfacing so zipper is at least 3/4” below top edge. Sew in place close to raw edges. If there is excess fabric, mountain fold it to form pleat at bottom edge.
Iron so fusing attaches to back side of pocket.
Fleece/Shearling layer: cut to either size of back ( no pocket) or 1/2 inch longer than pocket fabric below zipper.
On top edge - Fold raw edge and hand sew to fabric pocket, just below zipper. Baste stitch other raw edges to hold in place.
Outside Cover
Front and back: Lay interfacing pieces onto the wrong side of outside fabric. Cut 1/2 inch allowance around the pieces. Flip and iron on cover fabric side to fuse.
narrow fold raw edge and then overlap the inner lining and sew in place. Do this for all edges of front and back.
on front. At center of window, snip fabric. Trim away fabric to 1/2 to 3/4 of window edge. Snip on curves to fold under raw edge and glue cover fabric as edging of window - covering raw edge of lining.
on inside of back, place doll and then place front over doll, matching edges and corners. Position doll so head is in center of window.
With doll in place, lay 3 inch piece of elastic over doll so elastic in under arms.
Pin and then sew in place.
gusset: cut 4 in strip. On long edges, fold raw edge in 1/2 inch
With right sides together, fold and sew 1 end.
Flip so sewing is inside end. Insert interfacing, flush with sewing and under one of the raw edge folds. Iron so fusing seals to fabric.
Trim open end with 1/2 inch excess. Fold raw edge under and iron.
Prep Zipper and D Rings
Add zipper and D rings for strap:
If zipper tape is not width of gusset - sew folded 2” wide strips to each side of zipper tape
then trim to width of gusset.
from gusset cover scraps, cut 2 3” pieces, fold in raw edges and then fold in half to fit inside D rings, thread through D rings and sew close
match fabric end of D ring to each end of zipper tape and sew in place.
Assembly
Mark 2” from top edge of front and back. Mark center of front and back at top edge. Mark center of zipper tape.
match center of zipper to center of front, with 1/4 inch over lap. Sew close to edge of zipper/ zipper fabric. Match the back center to zipper in the same way and sew.
fold gusset in half, mark center mark center if front and back at bottom.
Match center of gusset to center of front, wrong sides together. Sew bottom edge. Match back center to gusset in same way and sew.
close the sides by making a miter fold in gusset and with edges of gusset and front together, sew. Repeat and sew other side of front. Repeat process to attach back to gusset.
bring loose ends of zipper/ d rings onside of gusset and tack in place by hand. Open zipper and whip stitch loose edges of zipper tape/zipper fabric to the front and back of the bag.
Attach straps to D rings
Add Window and Finishing Trim
Using hot glue, make a bead of glue around the edge of the ornament half. push edge of ornament half and glue onto the front of bag, lining out with window cut out. Using hot glue, trim edge of ornament to better secure the bubble to the cover fabric.
now your bag is ready for safe doll travels.
