DIY Stereo Binaural Microphone Mount Using Hearing Aid Shells (DPA 4060/4061/4063)

This project shows how to build a discreet stereo binaural microphone mount using inexpensive hearing amplifiers as compact enclosures for DPA 4060 / 4061 / 4063 miniature microphones. It’s designed for stealthy above-the-neck mounting, especially in environments where visibility and attention need to be minimized.
Supplies

- 2x DPA 4060 / 4061 / 4063 miniature microphone (black)
- 2x inexpensive hearing amplifiers
- Mini black hair elastics (black)
- Pair of scissors
- Isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning)
- Matte black spray paint suitable for plastic
Cut Off the Original Ear Tips
Use a pair of scissors to carefully cut off the soft ear tips from the hearing amplifiers. They aren’t needed for this build; removing them gives a cleaner shape for mounting the microphone capsules externally.
Paint the Hearing Aid Shells (Optional)
- Clean: Wipe the shells thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oil, or residue.
- Paint: Shake the spray paint well. Apply several thin, even coats from about 15–20 cm away. Let each layer dry 10–15 minutes before applying the next.
- Cure: Let the painted shells sit for 24 hours to fully harden.
This step gives the shells a matte black finish that visually blends with the black microphone capsules, creating a seamless, discreet appearance behind the ears.
Mount the Mic Capsules on Top of the Shells

Place each DPA microphone on top of the painted hearing aid shell. Secure each capsule using two mini hair elastics, wrapping them around both the capsule and the shell so the mic stays tightly in place. Position the capsule to face outward, naturally mimicking the position of the ears.
Tip: For extra discretion, you can tunnel a hole through the shells to mount the microphones inside instead of on top.
Place the Shells Behind Your Ears

Position each modified shell just behind your ears, like a real hearing aid. Press gently into place—they should stay firmly on their own, even with light movement. Ensure each microphone capsule is aimed straight ahead toward the sound source.
Optional – Add Cable Management

To keep mic cables tidy, use cable sliders cut from old Apple wired headphones. This improves comfort and stealth by neatly bundling the two cables as they run to the recorder.
