• Ruler and Tape measure
• All purpose thread
• Sewing machine
• Buttons
• Iron and ironing board

Choose the fabric that are the most common for bedding such as Cotton, Percale, Sateen, Silk, Egyptian cotton...
Good choice will be washable and durable fabric which gives you most comfortable sleep. I use Cotton Sateen that doesn`t shrink, wrinkle and can be machine washed.

Tip: In a bed linen the fabric should not shrink beyond 5%, anyway to be sure wash, dry and iron your fabric before beginning to work with it.

There aren’t strict standards for bedding sizes so you can make any size cover – just measure your own duvet and add allowance. Since fabric that we buy is wide enough for a full duvet, you’ll need just to mark off and cut the front and back piece.

My duvet measures 195cm by 210m (78" by 83"). I have added 4cm (1 1/2") to the width and 9cm (3 1/2") to the length so I am cutting my fabric 200 cm by 220m (I rounded)

After you have your size, we need to figure out how to cut up the fabric. "Place" the sides more effective on fabric, keeping same direction for both.
You should get 2 pieces: Front and Back

Tip: You can trim off the selvage edges of your fabric because they are more tight weave and can shrink differently than the rest of the fabric.

Work on wrong side of fabric

Mark a line 6cm/2″ along the bottom edge, fold this 6cm/2” of fabric to the inside and press.

Fold up again 3cm/1” to the inside and press again.

Stitch hem close to the exterior fold line and again close to the interior fold line.

Do the same on both sheets.

I like using French seams, so that there is no chance of any fraying on the inside of the duvet cover and really nice professional-looking finished result.
So begin by placing your two rectangles with wrong sides together. Pin and sew a 1cm (1/4”) seam on three edges - top and sides.

Turn the fabric wrong side out and iron the seam closed. Using a slightly larger seam allowance, sew the same three sides together. This encloses the raw edges within the seam. Your French seam is done!

You have many options for closing up the bottom of the duvet. Buttons and buttonholes will be easy to do with the buttonhole attachment that comes with most sewing machines.

Turn the duvet cover with right side out and sew 40cm/ 20″ towards the middle along the seams, sewing through both fabrics. This will be the bottom corner of your cover. Repeat on the other side.
You should now have a gap of about 120cm/ 40″ across the bottom.

Mark the place for buttonholes (back side) and buttons(on other side) at every 20 cm.
Sew on the buttons.
