  • You can search and download a suitable model from Thingiverse
  • I used "baby groot pot (re-remix) by aricard" link https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3357065
  • My printer settings were as below
    • Slicer: Cura 4.8
    • Resolution: 0.28
    • Infill: 10%
    • Supports : Tree, everywhere, angle 60°
    • Filament: black PLA
    • Printing time: 14 hrs
    • Scale : 150% ( height 15cm)

Base Color

  • If the 3d printed Groot is not black, then we must first paint it with a thin black acrylic paint
  • Let it dry for a day before we continue
  • Take the dark brown acrylic color and spread it on a white sheet of paper as shown
  • Using a plain white sheet helps us to understand what colors will look like when mixed
  • Using a thick (0.5") brush, apply a very thin coat of paint on 3d printed Groot
  • Before the dark brown paint dries, dry brush with some yellow
  • Again use paper to thin out the paint
  • Since the brown paint is wet, the yellow paint mixed with it and give a light brown wooden look
  • This will highlight the raised areas as a light shade of brown
  • Before we continue, we will leave this to dry for 2 to 3 hours
  • I covered the eyes too, donot worry, we will fix it later
  • I didn't use any primer so that I could use 3dprinter's layer as wood texture
  • Don't use an excessive amount of paint, as this will fill all the texture etc

Green Veins

  • Using some green acrylic paints highlight some veins on the hands
  • On it's head paint green in the cracks to green moss growth look

Eyes

IMG_20201122_114517.jpg

  • It is easy to scrape off the acrylic paint from the eyes
  • I used a toothpick to remove any paint
  • As per some images on the internet, the iris is black and the sclera is red (the white part of our eye is called sclera)
  • Painted sclera as a mixture of red-brown color and left the eye as black
  • If you are not able to scrape the paint, use black acrylic paint on it
  • To fake light reflection on the eye, use a white marker to draw the reflection

Finishing

IMG_20201122_120242.jpg
  • Let the acrylic paint dry for at least 24 hr
  • Inspect groot, if there are any areas that were missed, Paint where needed
  • Apply a coat of varnish spray to protect the paint job\
  • Let it dry for a day
  • Plant a small plant and admire your work
