DIY Aquarium Crafting With Styrofoam!
In this tutorial, I'll show you how to turn a styrofoam box into an outdoor mini aquarium. This aquarium is suitable for keeping bettas or guppies, or for growing aquatic plants. Let's see how to do it:
Supplies
- 1 box of Styrofoam
- Paper knives
- Tape
- Cement
- Silicone glue
- Glass panels are smaller than styrofoam
Handling the Foam Box
If you buy an old styrofoam box, you need to wash it thoroughly and let it dry.
In case you use a new styrofoam box, skip this step.
Create a Glass Surface for the Foam Box
You should choose a glass panel that is 80% of the size of the side of the box.
Measure carefully and then, using a paper knife, cut off a portion that will fit your glass.
Use silicone glue to firmly fix the glass panel to the wall of the foam box. Leave the box in a cool place for 3-6 hours for the glue to dry.
Treat the Surface of the Foam Box
Use duct tape to wrap around the outside of the box.
Inside the styrofoam you use cement mixed with water, sweep from 1 to 3 times. This will help prevent the foam box from leaking water later. Then, you leave the barrel in a cool place for 1-3 hours for the cement to dry.
Handling the Foam Box
After the silicone sealant and cement layer have completely dried, the fish tank made of foam boxes is now complete.
You need to fill the fish tank with water and soak it for 3-5 days before releasing the fish. You can add a little banana stem or alum to treat the tank faster.
Set Up the Aquarium
Most of the time, when choosing to use a styrofoam box to raise fish, people will not attach filters. It is both entangled and not really necessary when keeping fish outdoors.
You can use some filter materials such as: lava rock, coal slag to spread a layer under the foam box. Add some aquatic plants such as water orchids, rhododendrons, water hyacinths, weasel tails, etc. It will help create a living environment for microorganisms.
Hopefully these 5 steps will help you make a mini tank from an old foam box. If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know in the comments section below.
