DIY Alphabet Wheel for Kids Learning

Cover.jpg

This project started from a simple moment at home.

One day, my child said, "Dad, I want to buy this alphabet wheel" while showing me a product from an online shop.

Instead of buying it, I decided to make one myself, using simple tools and materials I already had.

The goal is simple:

  1. Help kids learn letters
  2. Make learning fun and interactive

This alphabet wheel is rotatable, customizable, and designed to support early reading practice in a plyaful way.

It's not perfect, it's handmade - but it works, and most importantly, my child enjoys using it.

Supplies

Materials

  1. Printed alphabet wheel design (A4, 2 sheets)
  2. Laminating plastic / clear film
  3. Paper fastener / split pin (for rotating the wheels)
  4. Cardboard or thick backing paper (optional, for sturdiness)

Tools

  1. Printer
  2. Scissors / Cutter
  3. Laminating machine (or manual lamination method)
  4. Hole punch or sharp tool for making center holes

All materials are simple and easy to find. You can also adjust the size or materials based on what you have at home.

Create the Initial Design

step-01.jpg

Start by designing the alphabet wheel layout. This include arranging letters in circular sections so they can be rotated later. You can use any design software you're comfortable with.

Tip: Keep the letters big, clear, and easy to read for kids.

Finalize the Print-ready Design

step-02.jpg

Once the layout feels right, prepare the design for printing. Make sure all circles are aligned and the center point is clearly marked.

Print the Design

step-03.jpg

Print the design on two A4 sheets using regular paper. You can use thicker paper if available, but regular paper works fine.

Cut Along the Shapes

step-04.jpg

Carefully cut each circular layer following the design outlines. Take your time so the cirlces stay neat and smooth.

Prepare for Lamination

step-05.jpg

Arrange the cut pieces neatly and place them inside laminating plastic. This will make the wheel more durable for kids.

Laminate the Pieces

step-06.jpg

Run the pieces through a laminating machine. If you don't have one, any manual clear covering method can work.

Trim After Lamination

step-07.jpg

After lamination, cut the pieces again following the original shape. Make sure no sharp edges are left.

Make the Center Hole

step-08.jpg

Create a hole at the center of each circle. This is where the fastener will go, allowing the wheel to rotate.

Assemble the Wheel

step-09.jpg

Stack the circles in order and secure them using a paper fastener or split pin. Check that each layer rotates smoothly.

Done - Ready to Play & Learn!

step-10.jpg

Your alphabet wheel is finished! Kids can rotate the layers to form letters or simple words while learning through play.

Note: This project is simple, affordable, and fully customizable. Feel free to modify the design to match your child's learning needs.
