DIY Air Purifier From Cardboard & Masks

I had several face masks that were not used, so I decided to recycle them by using them as filter in my homemade air purifier. Using some cardboard for the shell, a PC fan for moving air and a face masks to filter the air, i made this diy air purifier for my desk.

- Cardboard

- PC Fan ( 12v or USB )

- Face Masks

- White tack glue

- Fan grill ( Optional )

Using my ninja skills, i instantly cut all the cardboard to the right size using an utility knife!

Then I cut an opening for a 12x12 fan in one of the 18x18 piece of cardboard, leaving the corners there to hold the fan in place.

I also cut an opening in the 10x18 cm front cardboard piece ( leaving a 1.5 cm frame ) to let the air enter, this is also where I'm going to insert filter cartridges.

I assemble the base first, you can see in each pictures how I assemble each pieces together.

I also assemble the four pieces that will go around the 12x12 fan. I cut a slit in the back of this cardboard shroud to pass the fan wire through.

I insert the fan inside, then i glue it to the base that I made two steps earlier.

To give a nice look to my air purifier, I add 4 small legs under it.

To make the filter cartridges, i cut some 10x18 pieces of cardboard and I cut the inside again leaving a 1.5 cm frame all around.

Then i take a face mask, i remove the straps, i apply some glue all around the face mask and i firmly press the cardboard frame on the mask. Ideally, to make sure it is airtight, add some weight over the cardboard frame until the glue dries.

The filter cartridges are easy to install, just insert them inside, and to remove and change them, just pop them out.

What's nice using face masks is you can choose the color of your choice for the filter.

If you have children or pets, you can add a fan grill to avoid injuries to fingers or paws!

I'm using a simple 12v power supply to power my case fan.
