DIY 3D Printed Monitor Stand




I designed and built a modular monitor stand using a combination of 3D printing and wood, modeled in Adobe Fusion. The stand features a sturdy wooden center for durability, while the 3D-printed side supports make it easy to assemble and customize.
One of the key features of this design is the slot underneath, allowing you to stack additional blocks to increase the height as needed. This makes it adaptable to different desk setups and ergonomic preferences. Since the supports are entirely 3D printed, it's a simple, cost-effective, and customizable build that anyone with a 3D printer can recreate.
In this guide, I'll walk you through the design process, materials used, and assembly instructions so you can build your own adjustable monitor stand!
Supplies






Materials:
- 3 x Wood Plank (22 cm height × 45 cm length(can be variable))
- 3D Printer Filament (PLA, PETG, or preferred material)
- Spray Paint or Wood Finish (for aesthetics and protection)
Tools:
- 3D Printer
- Hand Saw (or similar cutting tools for wood)
- Sandpaper (for smoothing wood edges)
- Drill & Screws (optional, for added stability)
Adding spray paint or wood finish will enhance the look of your monitor stand and protect the wood from wear over time!
3D Designing and Printing















Designing in Adobe Fusion
The 3D-printed supports were designed using Adobe Fusion, ensuring a balance of strength, modularity, and ease of printing. Here’s how the design was created:
- Basic Structure:
- The side supports were shaped to provide a stable base for the wooden plank.
- The dimensions were set to match the thickness of the wood while leaving room for a snug fit.
- Special Stacking Slot (Image 2) :
- A slot was designed underneath each 3D-printed support, allowing additional blocks to be inserted.
- This feature enables height adjustment by simply adding more printed pieces, making the stand adaptable to different setups.
- Reinforcement & Aesthetics:
- The supports were designed with Honeycomb to increase durability and decreasing filament used.
- Fillets and chamfers were added for a smooth, professional look.
3D Printing Process
- Filament Choice:
- PLA or PETG is recommended for strength and ease of printing.
- PETG is more durable if you want extra sturdiness.
- Print Settings:
- Layer Height: 0.2mm (for a balance between detail and speed)
- Infill: 25%-40% (higher for extra strength)
- Supports: Not required
- Print Orientation: On Side
- Post-Processing:
- Sanding may be needed to smooth rough edges.
- Spray paint or primer can be applied to improve aesthetics.
With this modular 3D-printed + wood design, you can easily adjust the height by adding extra layers, making it both customizable and easy to assemble!
Cutting Wood


To create the wooden center of the monitor stand, follow these steps:
1. Measuring & Marking
- Take a wood plank with dimensions 22 cm (height) × 45 cm (length).
- Mark the cutting lines carefully using a ruler and pencil to ensure accurate dimensions.
- If you plan to customize the height, adjust the plank size accordingly.
2. Cutting the Wood
- Use a hand saw or any suitable cutting tool to cut the wood along the marked lines.
- Ensure straight and clean cuts to fit seamlessly into the 3D-printed supports.
- If using power tools (like a jigsaw or circular saw), make slow, controlled cuts for precision.
3. Smoothing the Edges
- After cutting, use sandpaper (medium to fine grit) to smooth out rough edges.
- This will help the wood fit perfectly into the 3D-printed parts and give it a polished finish.
4. (Optional) Finishing the Wood
- Apply spray paint, wood stain, or varnish to enhance durability and match your desk setup.
- Allow it to dry completely before assembling the stand.
Now your wooden center piece is ready for assembly with the 3D-printed supports!
Finalizing



After cutting the wood and 3D printing the supports, follow these steps to assemble and finish your monitor stand:
1. Assembling the Stand
- Insert the wood plank into the 3D-printed supports. Ensure a snug fit for stability.
- If the fit is too tight, lightly sand the edges of the wood or the 3D-printed slots.
- If the fit is loose, apply wood glue or small screws to secure it.
2. Adjusting the Height (Optional)
- If you need more height, stack additional 3D-printed blocks into the special slot underneath.
- Ensure the blocks align properly for a stable and sturdy build.
3. Finishing Touches
- Check for any rough edges and smooth them out with sandpaper.
- Apply a final coat of spray paint, stain, or varnish to enhance durability and aesthetics.
- Let it dry completely before placing your monitor on it.
4. Testing the Stability
- Place your monitor on the stand and check for wobbling or imbalance.
- If necessary, adjust the supports or add reinforcements for extra stability.
