D4E1: Reading-tool 2.0 (Advanced Production Process)
Info:
- Two students Industrial product design in Kortrijk (Belgium) came up with this reading-tool. We started based of an existing design and have developped it into another design. The reading-tool originally has been developped for a cliënt named Clare who faces difficulties reading a book and using her Ipad due to a heavy backache. The reading-tool has been designed parameticly so that it can be changed for each person induvidually.
- This instrucable has been made for advanced production processes.
Tools:
- milling machine
- injection molding set up
- cutting tool (fe: scissor)
- spanner
Materials:
- adjustable desk lamp (standard part, it has to be able to handle the weight of a book and- or tablet)
- MDF plate 5mm (dimensions depending on personal choice)
- bicycle stretcher/elastic rope (diameter 7mm)
- axial ball joint (screw thread at the end 6mm)
- 4 butterfly nuts and fitting bolts M4
Disassembling the Lamp
- Every unnecessary part has to be decreased so that the moving frame is the only thing that remains. The lamp can be mounted at the back for using while reading as the cliënt wishes itself.
Milling the Reading Plate
- Find a milling machine near you. Thereafter you upload our file into the machine and let it do the work for you.
- The CAD file is parametrical. There is a choice between a couple of standard dimensions: "klein"/"middel"/"groot" models for respectively a book and- or tablet. The dimensions can be found under "Partfamilies" inside the CAD file. A small manual accompanied by the needed CAD file can be found in the attachment.
ONLY FOR TABLETS: Injection Molding the Clamps
- This step is only required if the reading plate is provided by the necessary holes and slots for a tablet/phone. (Depending on the choices you made earlier in this process). The clamps has to be molded 4 times.
** We have printed the clamps in an industial way for demonstration, following the rules of injection molding **
ONLY FOR TABLETS: Attaching the Clamps for Tablets
- A bolt is pierced through the molded model and attached on the back by a butterfly nut. They are placed as shown on the pictures and can always be shifted by loosening the nuts on the back.
ONLY FOR BOOKS: Cutting Stretchers
- There are 3 stretchers to be cut with the right dimensions: the height of the reading plate + 10cm for knots. (again, the dimensions are depending on the choices earlier on in the process: "klein"/"midden"/"groot" or totally custom)
ONLY FOR BOOKS: Attaching the Stretchers
- The biggest stretchers (7mm) are tied onto one side, on top or at the bottom. The other side is fixed into one of the provided gaps as shown on the second picture.
- The thin stretcher in the middle of the reading plate is tied on both sides.
Attaching Ball Joint to Reading Plate
- In the middle of the reading plate there is a sloth provided covering the entire length of it. The bolt with spacer ring is pierced through the slot and rotated into the end of the ball joint.
! Make sure the ball joint is mounted at the backside of the plate !
Attaching Reading Plate to the Frame
- The end of the ball joint is provided with screwing thread. At the end of the lamp frame there is mounted a connection piece. Both pieces fit into each other and the connection piece has to be tightened until the ball joint can't rotate anymore inside.
Final Assembly
- The reading-tool can be mounted to a table, a chair, or anything you want once everything is mounted in position. The clamp at the bottom of the moveable lampframe can be mounted on just about everything.
