Cycle Battery Charger
Maybe your going cycling in the hills, maybe there is a zombie apocalypse, where fuel and energy are the most important stuff, you turn to using your cycle. Cycle, one of the greatest inventions of man, shows us how something so simple can achieve wonder! Batteries on the other hand, are wonderful and convenient device! They store energy which we can use anytime we want. What could possibly go wrong when combine batteries and a cycle? Nothing! And in this Instructable I will e showing you all how to make a Solar-Dynamo-Battery charger!
Getting the Required Material
We need :
1) A single battery holder (size of your choice)
2) Some wire
3) A blocking diode
4) Some toothpicks
5) Foam paper
6) Some tape & a pair of scissors
7) A smooth, easy to turn Dynamo and a simple solar panel
Use a multimeter to check if everything works and keep a solder by your side.
Setting Up the Dynamo
Simple task with tape, I have uploaded a photo with all the steps, one by one. For those of you who are still not clear about it, here are some good old textual information:
1) Take two pairs of toothpicks and place them the same way as shown in the picture.
2) Tape up their ends tightly.
3) Take any sharp object (I used a pincer from my bio lab kit) and insert it inside the gap in between the two toothpicks.
4) Tape the two pairs of toothpicks together perpendicularly as shown.
5) Again, insert the picer and make a hole through the tape, I any tape covered the center of the " + " formed by the toothpicks.
6) now, insert the " + " in your dynamo.
7) Take a foam sheet, cut out 4 similar pieces of foam.
8) Tape them at the end of the toothpicks in an orderly manner, with all of them facing each others back, either clockwise or anti clockwise.
Soldering Everything Together
Follow the simple schematic I drew. If you still have any confusion, check the photos that I uploaded too.
1.
Solar panel + _____> Dynamo +
Solar panel - _____> Dynamo -
2.
Dynamo - ______> Battery holder -
3.
Solar panel + _____> Blocking diode
Blocking diode _____> Battery holder +
That's it! Now you are done with Cycle battery charger! All that's left is the cycle......
Attaching the Device to Your Cycle
Take some tape, and tape the end of the dynamo , solar panel and battery holder in your cycle, anywhere you fell comfortable. I found the front of my cycle to be the best place to attach it as the charger is exposed to a lot of light and wind.
It works like a char and battery got charged after a few hours of cycling in windy and sunny terrain just outside city! Now you can use that battery for anything, be it powering your cycle headlights or using it as a zapper against zombies, its your call!
