Cute, Durable and Strong Paper Box
This origami paper box is easy to make and will take a very minimal amount of your day.
Depending on what size paper you use you can get varying sizes. They are great to store stuff in!! In one I store my office supplies and in another, I use it to store pins.
They look very good and are a good additional piece to add to any space. It is fun to make and the whole family can make it together!! :)
Now turn on your relaxing music, get your paper, and get ready to make your cute box.
Supplies
You will only need colored paper (or if you like everything white then use white:). If you don't already have papers that are perfect squares then you will need scissors. You will also need the determination to make this happen because if you don't get it from the first try it's OK!! ;)
You need 8 squares to make one box including the lid.
Note: You only need to do this step if you don't have papers that are already squares
Make the Paper Square
To make a square fold one corner of the paper to meet the opposite edge of the paper. You will have some remaining paper that you have to cut off. Sorry, I don't have a picture for this one! :(
Make sure to make 8 of these. 4 for the bottom of the box and 4 for the lid of the box.
Fold Your Square Paper in Half (Bottom of the Box)
Take one of your square papers and fold it in half then open it up again. Make sure to make your creases extra strong because they are CRUCIAL to making the box.
Fold One Side to the Middle Crease (Bottom of the Box)
Now when you have opened up the fold there should be a line in the middle separating the paper in half. Fold one side of the paper in half down to that line. The crease that line and then open it back up like with the previous step.
Make Flaps in the Top Section (Bottom of the Box)
Now that you have 3 sections fold the top corners into flaps. Crease them but don't open them back up again like with the previous steps.
Does it not look like a dog? The only thing that's missing is the cute smile. :)
Bottom Corner to Opposite Flaps (Bottom of the Box)
Take one of the bottom corners (without the flaps) and fold it to the opposite flap. Crease it tightly and do not open it again.
Fold the Side With the Flaps (Bottom of the Box)
The side that has the flaps now has to be folded over on top of the paper that was just folded. Crease it tightly and do not open it up again. Keep the paper in this position for the next step.
Fold From One Side to the Other (Bottom of the Box)
In the same position from the next step fold the paper from the right top corner to the top left corner. Crease it tightly then open it back up.
Fold Up to the Top Triangle (Bottom of the Box)
After opening it, turn it about 45 degrees to the left. After that fold the bottom up to a fold to a triangle that you will be able to see if you have followed the instructions correctly. Do not fold it all the way but only about 3/4 of the way. That means that you should NOT crease 1/4 of it on the right side.
Making the Corner of the Box (Bottom of the Box)
This part is the most challenging and the most confusing part. In simple terms, all you have to do is put your finger between the small triangle (as shown in the middle of the first picture) and fold down on it. Because of the tight creases, you made earlier this should hold in a shape like the third photo shown.
Repeat Steps 1-8 Three More Times
Now using another color (or the same color) repeat the steps above until you have 4 pieces that are identical to each other (except for color).
Connect the 4 Pieces (bottom of the Box)
As you may have noticed they all will have a space inside each of the flaps.
Take two of your pieces and insert the pointy flap into the straight flap of the other piece. Then take a third and do the same thing. When you get to your 4th insert the pointy flap into the straight flap. This should leave you with only one straight flap left. Take the pointy flap of the piece next to it (it should also be unconnected) and put the pointy flap into the straight flap.
When all of them have connected... CONGRATS you have finished the bottom part of your box. Now you only have to make the lid!!
Optional Step
If you want to make sure that it is strong enough to hold your things I suggest you add tape when connecting them together.
Fold Your Paper in Half (Lid of the Box)
Just like in the bottom of the box fold the SQUARE paper in half then open it up again.
Fold Down One Corner (Lid of the Box)
After opening it up again fold the upper right corners flap down to the middle crease. Make sure to tightly crease this. DO NOT open it back up again.
Fold the Paper in Half Along the Diagonal (Lid of the Box)
Now fold the paper in half across the diagonal. DO NOT open it back up again. Crease it tightly. This should make your once square into an almost triangle with one straight side.
Making a Triangle Flap (Lid of the Box)
Adjust your paper so it is oriented like the image above. Then fold the bottom point up to the top of the paper. Crease tightly then open it again.
Fold Up to the Crease (Lid of the Box)
Now orient your paper so the triangle is pointing up. DO NOT flip it when changing the orientation instead only rotate it. Using the crease you just made fold the bottom up to that crease. It should now look like a hat but with one side being longer. (The left side) Open it up again.
Fold Paper (Lid of the Box)
Rotate your paper until the pointy side is pointing down. Then take the upper right corner and fold it to the upper left side. Crease and open.
Fold Up to the Crease (Lid of the Box)
Sorry about all the rotating but now rotate the paper so the pointy part is pointing up. Fold the bottom part up to the crease that makes the top part a triangle. (Like the GIF above). DO NOT open it back up but DO crease tightly ONLY until 3/4 of the way like with the bottom of the box.
Making the Corner Piece (Lid of the Box)
For this step you do everything that you did in Step 9.
Step 9:
This part is the most challenging and the most confusing part. In simple terms, all you have to do is put your finger between the small triangle (as shown in the middle of the first picture) and fold down on it. Because of the tight creases, you made earlier this should hold in a shape like the third photo shown.
Repeat Steps 12-19 Three More Times
Now using another color (or the same color) repeat the steps above until you have 4 pieces that are identical to each other (except for color).
Connecting the Four Pieces to Make the Lid
Repeat of step 11:
As you may have noticed they all will have a space inside each of the flaps.
Take two of your pieces and insert the pointy flap into the straight flap of the other piece. Then take a third and do the same thing. When you get to your 4th insert the pointy flap into the straight flap. This should leave you with only one straight flap left. Take the pointy flap of the piece next to it (it should also be unconnected) and put the pointy flap into the straight flap.
When all of them have connected... CONGRATS you have finished the bottom part of your box.
Optional Step
If you want to make sure that it is strong enough to hold your things I suggest you add tape when connecting them together.
CONGRATS!! YOUR DONE!!
