Custom Workbench W/ Kreg Jigs

Here you will find my workbench I built a few days ago. I had some parts come in from Kreg Tool's to improve on the design from Shanty-2-Chic.

The first step I did was make an identical top for on top the original top. I need an extra 3/4" of top so the Kreg rails would fit flush with the top.

These photos show the Kreg rails I will be using.

This step is where I test fit the rails. I laid them out where I planned to place them, drew the lines for the 3/4" plywood cuts.

Once laid out, I cut the plywood to fit the rails. I used my jig saw for these cuts but it would have been easier to us the circular saw first and then clean up with the jigsaw.

This step I had to use my reciprocating saw to cut the rail to the correct length for the short side of the bench. I taped the edge of the cut to keep the cut as clean as possible.

Now that I have both lengths correct, I double check one more time to make sure they fit and look right.

This step I had to drill the holes for the rail mounts. The rails come with 1/4"x20 x 1-1/2 phillips pan-head bolts. I didn't know how these would mount before I ordered them and before I built this design bench. That being said, the current bolts would only work with the 2 - 3/4" plywood tops.

I had to run to the local hardware store to pick up a drill bit and 14 - 1/4"x20 x 5" phillips pan-head bolts. I had to do this because I was mounting through the 2x4 and 2 - 3/4" plywood tops.

These photos show the bolts and nuts in the mounting locations.

To install the rails, I had to slide the rails while matching up the nuts so they would go in the rails. This took some tweaking with the nut height and how they were turned. They only go in one way.

Once both rails were lined up and in position, I used my drill to tighten the bolts.

All I had left was to nail the top down.

Done.

The photo shows the Kreg vise clamps in the rails.

This step I screwed the Kreg side vise to the desired location on the opposite side of the bench.

I have been just throwing the cord and air hose around the past couple of weeks so I decided to add a mount for the cord and hose. I used 2x4's and pocket holes to mount it to the bench. Pick your own height and size of mounts to fit your needs.

Lastly you will see the finished product. I like how it turned out and can't wait to start using it in it's new form.
