Custom Made Spider

IMG_0694.JPG

I wanted to make a spider for a project at school. I mainly used foam among other things. This took a little over 2 weeks of 40 minutes. so like maybe 11 hours total. I don't know about drying times, but if you'd did it all in one sitting it would probably take less time.

Supplies

Materials:

Foam boards

Metal wire (like not thin but it has to be able to support a 2 pound spider)

Mod Podge

Black spray paint/ faux fur

Foam tubes/ pool noodles/ foam filler

Sheet of thin foam (choose what eye color you want)

Eyes (it can be anything like googly eyes)

Sandpaper

A lot of hot glue

Tools:

Scissors

Box cutter

Hot glue gun

Creating the Main Body/ Head Blocks

Get some foam boards and cut them into squares a bit bigger than the size of the spider part that you want as you will cut and sand the blocks down.

Then hot glue, or use wood glue to make a foam shape. I find hot glue works best.

Then begin cutting with a box cutter or foam cutter. Use the foam cutter to make an about round shape and use the box cutter for everything else.

Make sure to leave a side of both the head and the body flat so you can connect the two later!

Afterward use sand paper to make the things smooth.

Repeat for both head and body.

Connecting the Parts

Then when you're done, use the thin metal beams/ thick wire, to impale the head and body together. put some hot glue while they aren't completely closed tight on each other.

I would use a large rubber band or string to hold them together overnight so the shape doesn't shift.

Coating the Spider

Then add some Mod Podge over the whole thing to give it a polish. If you don't the spray paint will disintegrate the foam you worked so hard on.

Make sure to put some extra on the crevices and the midsection

Repeat after drying on any small holes until smoothed to your liking.

Spray Paint the Spider

Fixing the Spider

You can use some markers to recolor any scratched off paint. You could technically do this for the whole spider but its a huge pain, just spray paint it if you can.

Creating the Legs

Now we make the legs. The legs need to be about the length of the body or like four times the width of the spider.

Here I used one foam filler for both legs.

To make one I first cut a hole through the foam about halfway.

I used a 2 metal thin beams/ thick wire for the inside for stability.

Make sure to cut the thick wires at the joints for more flexibility (it's easier to bend one piece of metal than 2!)

After tie the legs together, or tape them together.

Then tie the legs to the spider's midsection.

(just wrap the string through the spider's legs then around the middle)

Finish the Spider

Add eyes (I cut a thin sheet of red foam into circles) and spray paint the string black, it it's not already.

Cut some foam and stab the mandibles on with the metal. Then add some hot glue as you're putting them in at the connection point.

There you go! It's done
