Custom Anglepoise Lamp Mount for IKEA Jerker Desk

While modify my IKEA Jerker desk to support 6 monitors, I needed to remove the existing shelves which left nowhere to attach an anglepoise lamp. So I copied the design of the end stops used to close off the main side bars and extended it to act as a support for the lamp.

Supplies

The only material used was PLA filament.

Copying the Existing Endstop

Having measure the original endstop, the first task was to duplicate this and hence check that it was possible to make.

The following steps through the design in Fusion 360.

  1. Construct a basic block. This is a simple extrude of a rectangular block.
  2. Add a curved top. Again a simple extrusion from a side sketch.
  3. Cut out sides where the desk's support will go. A further simple extrusion.
  4. Add indents which will allow slight flexibility.
  5. Shell out the interior.
  6. Shorten the inner part to match the original.
  7. Add some fillets to round off the edges.
  8. Apply indentations to the ends and mirror to the opposite end (not shown).
  9. Use a Sweep to join the middle indentation from one end to the other.
  10. Replicate this across the top with a Rectangular Pattern.

Apart from a minor adjustment, the replica endstop is now complete

Adding the Lamp Support

Adding the support for the lamp itself is simply a case of extending out from the side of the endstop.

  1. Create an offset plane, add a simple square sketch and the generate a Loft to join the two.
  2. Using a sketch on the underside, create a suitably sized hole for the lamp's base.
  3. Add some fillets to round the edges.
  4. Extrude extra support at the top to make an even support.
  5. More filleting to avoid places where dust might gather.
  6. Finally, a view of the underside.

And that's it!

Summary

I've had this in use now for several months with no problems. I did originally wonder if PLA would be strong enough, but since the model was printed in the orientation as show, the most strength supports the sideways stress extered by the lamp.

I've attached the Fusion 360 file in case you want to look at the sketches used and make your own if you also have an IKEA Jerker or similar desk and need to adjust the dimensions.
