Curvy Plywood Chair CNC
I really like making plywood furniture with Scandinavian design. With Baltic Birch you get a nice surface with almost no twigs and an even quality. If you want a more modern look, use laminated plywood. There are lots of laminates with different colors.
I have done the design in a CAD program and produced the curves for milling. The design is adapted to fit on a 4 x 8 ft sheet of plywood. If you like my design, I have several in my Etsy shop https://www.etsy.com/shop/CNCflatpack.
Supplies
- 1 sheet of Baltic Birch Plywood, 4 ft X 8 ft, 3/4" (19,05 mm)
- CNC router
- 1/4" router bit
- Sanding paper
- Wood glue
- Clamps
Download the Cutting File
First you have to download the cutting file.
The file is in four file formats:
- .svg
- .dxf
- .ai
Arrange the Parts
The parts are placed to fit on a 4 x 8 ft plywood sheet.
If your CNC machine cannot take entire sheets of that size, you will need to rearrange to fit your machine. The appropriate distance between the parts is about 3/4 ".
Cut the Parts
Now it´s time to cut the parts with your CNC-machine.
You should use a 1/4" (6.35 mm) router bit. Feeds and speeds depending on your machine.
Sanding...
Sanding is not the funniest part of woodworking but it has to be done. Take away all sharp corners and make them smooth. There is a lot of parts so please be patient, the result will be worth it.
Dry Fit
Now it´s time to try to put parts together.
- Start with one leg and put it together with some of the seat parts.
- Fit into the other leg.
- Put into the other seat parts.
- Don´t take the chair apart.
Glueing and Clamping
Clamping and gluing so many parts at the same time can be a bit tricky. If you do not own 70 clamps ;), you must divide the work into several parts.
- Remove a number of parts from the dryfitted chair and glue and clamp them.
- Let it dry and repeat until all parts are glued.
Finished!
Now you got an nice curvy chair!
Good luck with your build!
