Cupcake Costume With a Cherry on Top

Since this costume was for a toddler, I needed it to be comfortable and sturdy and easy to wear while gathering candy. Here's a glimpse of the structural base. The bottom cake part consists of vintage velvet stitched end to end, folded, filled with a layer of batting, and stitched at even intervals all around. A child's tank top was opened on the sides and expanded with triangular fabric inserts, then stitched to the cupcake base allowing the structure to hang perfectly from the shoulders. A wooden embroidery hoop holds it round in the middle (it will soon be secured with hand-stitching when the cupcake top is added).

The top consists of white felt sewn in a bubble shape with elastic gathering the waist and neckline. I sewed vintage lace around the neckline, hand-stitched the gathered waist to the cupcake base (securing the embroidery hoop), and stitched the felt to the tank top around the armholes. Next, I attached pastel puffballs with fabric glue and stuffed the belly with polyfil.

A cupcake needs a cherry on top so I made this hat. It consists of shiny red vinyl cut into a circle and gathered with elastic. The stem is composed of a strip of brown naugahyde folded and stitched on the edge, then inserted through a tiny hole in the top of the cherry hat. Wire was inserted into the stem and then coiled in a circle at the base inside the hat to make it stand up and curve outward. A circle of felt was stitched around the base of the stem on the inside of the hat to hide the wire and ensure that it will be comfortable.
