Mk. VI Crutch Carry

Carrying anything (cell phone, water bottle, even a pencil) when you're using crutches is not just difficult, it's dangerous!

The Mk. VI Crutch Carry keeps these items up above the handle of the crutch, so the weight of them isn't swinging around so much. There's even a trap door so you don't have to fish small objects out of the bottom of the pocket.

Supplies

You'll need:

  • about a 45cm (18 inch) square of something flexible -- woven fabric, vinyl film, etc.
  • a few inches of stick-on hook & loop fastener 12mm (1/2 inch} wide.
  • If you're using a fabric that could fray, you'll need some fray-stop or allow for a hem.

Make a Template

  1. Print the four parts of the template at 100% scale.

  2. Cut them out

  3. Tape them together at the "//" marks along the edges -- "A" to "A", "B" to "B", etc. See the last photo.

Cut Out and Install

  1. Cut out the material to the template outline
  2. Place the hook and loop fasteners as shown on the template. (The hook should go on the inside surface, and the pile on the outside surface. That way the hooks don't irritate the skin.)
  3. Remove the top pad from the crutch.Install the Carry (see video) and lay the tapered arms across the top of the crutch at the proper height. The bottom of the Carry should be about 10cm (4 in.) above the handle of the crutch.
  4. Bond, sew, or fasten (hook and loop) the ends of the tapered arms to keep the Carry at the proper height.
  5. Reinstall the top pad on the crutch.
