Crochet an Amigurumi Cell Phone Buddy

il_fullxfull.87979799.jpg
This amigurumi cell phone pattern is my original design and the PDF is available as a free download from Ravelry.com. You customize your phone (make a phone buddy!) by adding a cute face to the screen with felt or embroidery thread

To see more of my work or get copies of other patterns I've written, please visit my blog or Ravelry Pattern Shop . I also sell finished amigurumi in my Etsy shop .

Thanks for checking out my instructable and happy crocheting!

Getting Started

il_430xN.87028991.jpg
To make my amigurumi cell phone, I used the following materials:
  • Caron Simply Soft yarn in white and gray heather
  • Small pieces of white and gray felt
  • Polyester fiber fill
  • Black embroidery thread
  • White and gray sewing thread to match felt
All of the items were purchased at Jo-Ann Stores, but you can find them at almost any craft store. By the way, you can use any colors of yarn you like for this project, so have fun with it!

The tools you will need include:
  • Size E crochet hook (see my workshop on hooks for tips on selecting one)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • Sharp-pointed sewing needle
  • Stitch marker
Again, all of these items can be purchased at any craft store. However, if you want some really nice stitch markers, take a peek at S. Kate Hutchinson's shop, Spindle Cat Studio .

The following stitches/abbreviations are used in the pattern:

CH     Chain Stitch
SC     Single Crochet
ST      Stitch
STS   Stitches
MM     Move Marker
FO      Finish Off

Make the Phone Body

Make 2.

The phone body is made in two pieces. To get the oval shape, you will work in the back stitches of the foundation chain and continue from there in rounds.

Round 1: With white, CH 15. Make 2 SC is second CH from hook. Make 1 SC each in the next 12 CH STS. In the last CH, make 4 SC. Turn your work so you are working across the open loops on the back of the chain. Make 1 SC each in the next 12 loops. Make 2SC in the last loop. Place a stitch marker in the last SC to designate the end of the round (32 SC).

Round 2: Make 2 SC in each of the first 2 SCs, then 1 SC each in the next 12 STS. Make 2 SC each in the next 4 STS, then 1 SC each in the next 12 STS. Finish by making 2 SC in each of the last two STS. MM. (42 SC).

Round 3: Make 1 SC in first ST, then 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS. SC in the next 14 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC in each of the next 2 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then SC in the next 14 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC in the next ST. MM. (48 SC).

Round 4: Make 1 SC in each of the first 2 STS, then 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS. SC in the next 16 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC in each of the next 4 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then SC in the next 16 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC each in the last 2 STS. MM. (56 SC).

Round 5: Make 1 SC in each of the first 3 STS, then 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS. SC in the next 18 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC in each of the next 6 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then SC in the next 18 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC each in the last 3 STS. MM. (64 SC).

Round 6: Make 1 SC in each of the first 4 STS, then 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS. SC in the next 20 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC in each of the next 8 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then SC in the next 20 STS. Make 2 SC in each of the next 2 STS, then 1 SC each in the last 4 STS. MM. (72 SC). FO and weave in ends.

Make the Gray Band

DSC_0004a.JPG

The front and back body pieces are connected with a gray band that runs along the outside of the phone. To make the gray band, you will need one of the body pieces (it doesn't matter which) and your gray yarn.

Round 1: Join gray yarn at the bottom of the phone. Working in the back loops from round 6 of the phone body only, make 1 SC in each ST around. Place a stitch marker in the last SC to designate the end of the round (72 SC).

Round 2: Sc in each ST around. (72 SC). FO and weave in ends.

Make the Keypad, Screen, and Center Button

template.jpg

The image below is a template that you can use to cut out the felt shapes for your cell phone's key pad, screen, and center button. I left my phone plain, but you can easily stitch or glue a cute little face on the screen and have a phone buddy. After all, everyone likes to have someone to talk to!

TIP: For best results, save the image to your computer before printing.

Use white felt for the key pad and gray felt for the other pieces.

Embroidery

If you're like me, then you probably feel a little intimidated by embroidery. To help you out, I've drawn the keys and circle that I stitched on the templates.

If you're not confident "going freehand," pin the templates to the felt pieces you cut and sew through both the felt and the paper, tracing the drawn lines.

When you are finished stitching, wet the paper and gently tear out the template pieces. Leave your finished felt pieces to dry flat.

Sew the Felt Details On

Sew the felt pieces to the phone body with the gray band as shown.

Sew the Phone Together

DSC_0005.JPG

Using white yarn, sew the two phone body pieces together. Make sure to leave a small hole to stuff the phone.

TIP: I used a whip stitch and worked through the back loops only from the two pieces in order to keep the join on the back consistent with the front (see below).

Stuff the Phone

DSC_0007.JPG

Stuff the phone using about a handful of fiber fill. You want the phone to have some three-dimensionality, but don't stuff it so full that it puffs out.

Then,
finish stitching the phone closed and tie off the yarn. You can pull the tail inside the phone body (with the fiber fill) so it looks tidy.
