Crochet a Water Bottle Holder to Match Your Style!

Do you have an emotional support water bottle that you want literally strapped to your side at all times? Or do you just want a cute, boho aesthetic sling for your Hydro? Check out this tutorial! It requires just under 100 yards of cotton yarn and works up pretty quickly.

I recommend using cotton yarn because it'll stretch out the least - acrylic will work for this project, but the strap will sag way more after uses.

This is beginner friendly, as the only stitches you will need to know are single crochet, chain, and slip stitch. I do start with a magic circle but I typed up an alternate method of starting if you hate magic circles!

Supplies

Cotton yarn, roughly 100 yards

Scissors

Yarn needle

Crochet hook, size 5MM. If you crochet super tight, try a 6MM.

Water bottle / thermos - mine is about 3inches wide. If yours is larger, go with a bigger hook.

Stitches used:

Single Crochet = SC

Chain = CH

Slip Stitch = SS

Begin With a Magic Circle.

If you aren't sure how to complete a magic circle, check out guides on Youtube! or, alternatively.. CH 4. SS into the first chain to make a loop.

SC 8 Into Your Loop.

SC 8 times into your loop, then SS back to your first stitch. (total 8 SC)

2SC Into Each Stitch.

CH 1. Into your current stitch, make 2 SC. Make 2 SC in all stitches around. At the end, SS into your first stitch. (16)

1 SC, 2 SC, Repeat Around.

Ch 1. *In current stitch, 1 SC. In the next stitch, 2 SC.* Repeat this 1, 2, 1, 2, pattern until you make it all the way around. SS into first stitch. (24)

SC Around.

We won't be increasing stitches anymore. Although the base looks small now, it will take a larger shape as we build up!

At this point, double check to see if the base of your crochet holder is fitting your water bottle. If it's too small, consider going up a hook size.

Begin Creating the Mesh Loops!

Ch 1. SC into same stitch. *Ch 4, skip next three stitches, SC into the fourth stitch.* Repeat six times, ending with a slip stitch into that first SC. You should have a total of six loops.

Continue Crocheting Loops.

SS into closest loop. SC into same loop. *Ch 4, then SC into the next loop.*

Repeat *Ch 4, then SC into the next loop.* over and over until the loops reach almost to the top of your bottle. Make sure you periodically put your cozy on your bottle and don't make your chains too tight, or it may not fit! Keep a steady tension.

SC Around.

Once your loops are tall enough to cover your bottle, it's time to end with some SCs around. Remember that your crochet will stretch out a bit with use, so it's okay if your loops don't reach the very top!

After your last loop - make 3 SC into the same loop you're currently in. SC into the next single crochet (the loop dividers from the last rounds). Continue *3SC in loops, 1 SC in divider* all the way around. You should end with 24 SC total. SS into the first SC. (24)

Create Straps.

sew in strap.jpg

Ch 1. SC into current stitch, then SC into the next stitch. Turn, Ch 1, and SC into current stitch and the next stitch. Repeat *Turn, Ch 1, and SC into current stitch and the next stitch." over and over until your strap is long enough. This strap will stretch just from carrying the weight of your full bottle so don't make it too long! Mine ended up around 34 inches unstretched, 40 inches stretched. It's about 97 rows of the two SCs.

Weave in Ends.

Almost done! Once your straps are long enough, cut the yarn but leave about 6 inches. Securely sew the strap down to the opposite end. Make sure you knot and weave in securely - this needs to be strong enough to hold up your full water bottle.

Weave in the beginning end of yarn as well!

Enjoy!

Make several to match your different outfits. Take with you to walks, farmer's markets, school, anywhere! I made one for my large thermos and one for my small thermos so that I'll always have something to match. :) I used the same pattern, the cream one was just made using a 5.5MM hook and slightly fatter cotton yarn.

If you get coffee/tea/anything stained on your water bottle, I recommend following your yarn's washing instructions. If you don't have the label, try gently hand washing in cold water and hanging to dry.
