For anyone who has played a game from the Legend of Zelda line, this icon is very familiar. This crocheted version is approximentally five inches tall and and inch and a quarter wide. It is a simple project, and is great for practicing sewing pieces together.

Needed Supplies, Used Stitches, and Other Notes

Needed Supplies:

  • worsted weight yarn (I used Simply Soft in sunshine)
  • a size f (3.75 mm) crochet hook
  • scissors
  • yarn needle
  • fiberfill
  • dry beans or rice

Used Stitches:

  • chain (ch)
  • decrease (dec)
  • single crochet (sc)
  • double crochet (dc)

Other Notes:

  • You will be sewing all of the pieces together, so insure that all sides are even and the triangles are the same size.
  • Be careful while you are stuffing the pieces so that the sides do not bulge.

Creating the Triangles

Six triangles are needed. Once again, it is very important all of the triangles are the same size.

ch 16

  • row 1: skip the first stitch, dec, sc 13, chain and turn. (14)
  • row 2: dec, sc 12, ch and turn (13)
  • row 3: dec, sc 11, ch and turn (12)
  • row 4: dec, sc 8, dec, ch and turn (10)
  • row 5: dec, sc 8, ch and turn (9)
  • row 6: dec, sc 7, ch and turn (8)
  • row 7: dec, sc 4, dec, ch and turn (6)
  • row 8: dec, sc 4, ch and turn (5)
  • row 9: dec, sc 3, ch and turn (4)
  • row 10: dec twice (2)
  • row 11: dec (1)

Finish off and weave in ends.

Creating the Side Pieces

Inside Piece:

ch 46

  • row 1: skip the first two stitches, dc in 44 stitches, chain 2 and turn
  • row 2: dc in 44 stitches.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Outside Piece:

ch 84

  • row 1: skip the first two stitches, dc in 82 stitches, chain 2 and turn
  • row 2: dc in 82 stitches

Finish off and weave in ends.

This is wear it can get confusing, so bear with me, be patient, and ask me questions if you need to.

Attaching the Triangles to the Inner Edge:

There are two methods you could use here, but whichever you choose

  • Lay out three of the triangles in the final shape, longer sides on the bottom.
  • Take the shorter of the two edge pieces, and the bottom left triangle. Thread your needle with a long piece of yarn and begin to sew the two together. Start at the top tip of the triangle and at one end of the inside edge. Have the "excess" of the edge piece bent beneath the triangle. Sew down the left edge until you reach the lower right tip. Here, be careful to attach the very bottom of the piece, other wise it will be more difficult to sew on the outer edge later. This applies to the all the tips you will sew through out the triangle.
  • Pick up the lower right triangle, being careful to keep it in its final position, and hold it against the inner edge piece, level with the first triangle. The excess should be pointing down, perpendicular to the triangles. Begin sewing up the left side of the triangle until you reach the tip.
  • Bend the inner edge back, creating a flat section to attach the upper triangle. Be sure that the excess is on the edge facing you. There should be excess, simple hold it in place with a paper clip until you sew on the upper triangle. Begin sewing the upper triangle onto the inner edge piece, remembering to attach the tips securely.
  • Now that the first set of triangles are attached, sew the edge of the inner edge piece to itself. This secures it. Cut off excess yarn.
  • Take the other three triangle and sew them on the opposite edge of the edge piece. Take care to keep them even with their pairs, and at the same angle. When the final triangle is sewn on, finish off and trim off any remaining yarn.

Alternatively, you could sew the the first set of the triangle on flat. I forgot to take pictures of what it looked flattened, so there is a recreated photo above. This method is appears to be much simpler, and less confusing but as I did not use this method I cannot say for sure.

  • Lay out the inner edge piece flat and attach the triangles as show above.
  • Bend the inner edge piece back so it is perpendicular to the first set of triangles, and that the triangles are flat. Attach second pair of triangles to the opposite side of the first set, taking care to keep them even. Finish off and trim off any excess yarn when the final triangle is attached.

Attaching the Outer Edge and Stuffing:

To be clear, you will be switching back and forth between both sewing and stuffing. It sounds more confusing than it actually is.

  • Cut two long pieces of yarn, both approximately the same size. Tie a know on one side of each of the strands of yarn.
  • Line up the longer piece between the two pairs of triangles on the bottom of the triforce. Threading one strand of yarn through the edge piece, make sure that the end of the yarn is attached on what will be the inside of the edge piece. Sew the edge piece to the triangle until you reach about the 3/4 mark of the second edge of the second edge of the triangle. Repeat this process with the other piece of yarn and other half of the edge piece.
  • Now that you have the lower left triangle pretty much closed in, add in a fist full of beans or rise to the inside of the triangle and top if off with stuffing until it is filled firmly.
  • Continue sewing with one side until there is only about an inch of the triangle piece left. Switch over the other piece of yarn and sew the opposite edge of the outer edge until both sides are approximately at the same point. Stuff the triangle piece firmly with only fiberfill.
  • Continue sewing until there is only an inch of open space left at the bottom of the last triangle. Switch the other side and completely sew up one side and attach the two ends of the outer edge piece. Do not sew up the last section of the opposite side of the triangle. Finish off and tuck excess yarn into the triangle. Fill the rest of the space up with beans or rice. Finish sewing the edge piece and triangle together. Finish off and weave in the end.

Your triforce is now complete. Bravo, friend, you done it.
